Delicious whole wheat pastas! – Had a splendid evening here after finally walking in. I only regret that I hadn't stopped in sooner. Service here was impeccable, they were extremely attentive, funny and polite, and the busboy & waiter made sure everything was alright. The waiter even showed us a vintage menu from 1950 - which I could still get the chicken parm for just $1.25 again.
Anyways, the food was absolutely scrumptious. I picked this place especially because they have whole wheat bread in the bread basket and have whole wheat penne and linguini substitution for an extra $1. My date and I shared a delectable bean soup and mussels in white wine (and there were pretty big mussels inside). Then I ordered the fettucini with salmon, but they were kind enough to make it with whole wheat linguini and it was in such a creamy vodka sauce that I devoured every bite - there were lots of big, yummy salmon chunks in my dish. My date had the chicken parmigiana and he loved it. Then we shared the black and white cake with some cabernet sauvignon. I would definitely come back especially after the waiter made us feel so welcome.
Homemade Gnocchi, Need I Say More? – I sort of stumbled across Lanza on Saturday with a friend and in the back of my head I remembered my dad suggesting it one time, so we gave it a go. I saw a sign for homemade gnocchi and an outdoor garden on the window which made it all the more enticing for us.
While it wasn't on the menu, I did ask for the gnocchi since I thankfully noted the sign outside. I ordered it with a simple marinara sauce which was incredibly fresh tasting. My friend got the tortellini with a bolognese sauce. We both agreed that my pasta was better but his sauce was better. Overall it wasn't anything to write home about, but it was good Italian food at good prices (about $11 a dish).
Al Fresco Dining .. Italian ?? – A nice place for al fresco dining but don't expect authentic italian food. Stay with the simple dishes as these folks are not capable of anything else.
Great find! – A friend of mine lives right across the street and a bunch of us met for dinner. We didn't order appetizers because we wanted to leave room for dessert - although we wound up not ordering any. I got the pizza and split it with my boyfriend. It was DELICIOUS. The Steak Piazzola that my friend ordered was good, also... but ask for pasta instead of potatos. It's weird to have potatos in an Italian entree. Even the simple spaghetti bolagnase was delicous. The wine is very decently priced. Our entire dinner for six people only cost $135.
Not the Same – Lanza's was sold after the owner passed away and I hate to say it but it's not what it was. The service is fantastic as it always has been. However, traditional lovelies such as Prosciutto y Melon wound up tasting like dried ham and overripe melon. Entrees are not much better. I strongly recommend that if you have been here before you think before going back. Sorry to see the old place in this state. Atmosphere and service are still great though.
Great food, cheap tab – A group of 10 friends and I made reservations for the night of June 7. Upon entering the door of Lanza the manager guessed our party and was already leading us to our table. Service was fast and friendly, even custom-making a few dishes. I ordered the shellfish assortment in marinara sauce over linguine, and all I can say is wow. The shrimp were perfect, the calamari was fresh and tasty, and the clams were delicious. My friend ordered the salmon over linguine and her dish was amazing as well. The salmon was cooked to perfection, well done but still juicy and tender. For the group of 11 of us, our total tab ran $225, including everything (meal, tax, and tip). Since we're underage, I can't attest to the drinks here, but I can say the food and the service were perfect. A certain return is in the future!
