In Short – The "vegi" burgers (and the full bar) are the main draws: ranging from the Super Veg-Burger with lettuce, tomato and Abijah's secret sauce to the McKate (two "un-beef" patties, special sauce, lettuce, dairy or nondairy cheese, etc.), with a pizza burger, chili cheese burger and a portobello mushroom burger as well. Soups, various fried apps, salads and sandwiches are also served. Come the weekend, locals pack the place for the super-sweet brunch deal.

Editor's Tips

Save Money:
For brunch, $8.95 gets you a glass of fresh-squeezed juice, beer, wine, screwdriver or bloody mary, bottomless coffee or tea and a choice of entrees: pancakes, huevos rancheros, omelettes and more. For only $6.95, get coffee, eggs any style or tofu scramble, with home fries, toast and an un-sausage patty.

  1. From its retro-diner decor to its sharply-garlicked Caesar salad, Kate's is the eating destination of choice on B. There's a real emphasis here on making food that's tasty as well as veggy: Popcorn "shrimp" are just one standout example.
  2. like the casual relaxed atmosphere and it's a great place to meet friends, grab a quick bite, or have a casual business lunch.
  3. The ambiance is awful (lights too bright), the food is the equivalent of vegetarian "junk/fast food"-- nothing noteworthy in the least, they have a crappy wine selection, and when I am the only person sitting at the bar, I don't feel I should have to waiv
  4. Either because of its gentrified location, overpriced Boca burgers, or displaced lower-class citizens, I never went.

  1. And for those who do, my best friend LOVES real cheesecake, and for her birthday we got her this instead cuz she loves it so much.
  2. Now, I dont even love cheesecake in the first place, but this stuff is like crack!
  3. Highly recommend the country salad and the chocolate cake.
  4. The vanilla bean cheesecake is also great, it's both delicious and vegan.

  2. am vegan, and I like to sit at a bar, alone, and enjoy a meal.
  3. Kate's has a scrappy-yet-homey east village feel to it, and they just renovated the bar side of the restaurant to turn it into a real bar that's nice to hang out in.
  4. Good music and beers too.

  1. Great veggie burgers
  2. would recommend their sauteed collard greens, the southern cutlet sandwich, karen's burger, their bbq special, and the garlic fries.
  3. Great food on the lower east side
  4. don't know what they put in Abijah's secret sauce, but whatever it is, it's utterly o r g a s m i c. Goes great with almost everything I've ordered from there!
  5. Their tofu scramble is dry and poorly seasoned and is only enjoyable if eaten with the vegan benedict brunch special which is great.
  6. The best veggi burgers in the EV.

  8. The nachos and some of the appetizers were tasty but just average.
  9. My favorite entree is the Southern Fried Chicken (i.e. tofu) with mashed potatoes and gravy and garlicky sauteed greens, and I always ask for a side of spicy buffalo sauce.
  10. Highly recommend the country salad and the chocolate cake.
  11. Either because of its gentrified location, overpriced Boca burgers, or displaced lower-class citizens, I never went.
  12. The vanilla bean cheesecake is also great, it's both delicious and vegan.
  13. The food is banging & must add that I don't know how much you can eat, but I've gotten a good fill.

  15. am vegan, and I like to sit at a bar, alone, and enjoy a meal.
  16. The best vegetarian comfort food.
  17. The best I've had is the fried (un)chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy, simple and delicious.
  18. The food is always good.
  19. Great vegetarian food
  20. Kate's offers a great diner experience, excellent food and very friendly service at reasonable prices.
  21. (get the tofu scramble) Good value.
  22. Their food is incredible and unlike Kate's fried unchicken Red Bamboo's is passable for real chicken in flavor and consistency.
  23. Though I'm not a vegan, I love vegan and tofu cuisine.
  24. The buffalo wings with "blue cheese" sauce are insanely addictive, and even my meat-eating friends like them.
  25. The food is great and moderately priced (I love the unsausage).
  26. The veg reuben, the spinach and walnut salad with warm maple dressing, the enchiladas, etc.etc.

The best down and dirty

by kls79

I went there with a vegan friend who had these claims the place was amazing. When I got there, I found a cute little bar with limited seating, and a menu with practically every vegan comfort food you can think of. I got the McKate burger - and it was delicious. It's so good, my meat-eating husband loved it! The day after I went there with a friend, I went back with a vegan co-worker - and he loved it too!

The place where vegans go to die.

by Thatgirloh

In a nutshell, I have been here 3 times. 2 out of 3 times I did not tip the waiter which I have NEVER done at a restaurant.

We asked for mimosas they came back ten minutes later and said they had no champagne. We asked for breakfast said they didnt serve it anymore. We asked for orange slices in our sea sbreeze seltzers (since they didnt have mimosas) and they didnt have it. We drank our drinks as fast as possible decided not to eat there and then decided to wait at the register for the bill and payment since we realized they would never be coming back to our table. The service are angry hung over old hipsters who play the most depressing music and keep the lights so dark you assume you must be in vegan hell.

SKIP THIS. try the organic grill or quantum leep.

Awful!

by BarReview1

I went there for a friend birthday and opened a tab. Two hours later I go to close my tab after ANDRE has been charging me up until 15 minutes prior, just to find out he gave my card to someone else who charged $70 on my tab of what should have been $12. Then, I find out another $544 was charged within the hour...they said "sorry, nothin we can do" . I will never go back to this place with idiot bartenders and a manager who shouted at me for telling her what happened. Thanks Kate Joints for running up a $556 tab on what should have been $10! never again!!

  • Pros: cheap
  • Cons: bad bartenders - losing credit cards

Highly Over-rated.

by gtejada

I've been a vegetarian for about two years. And from the start all of my vegan and vegetarian friends have recommended Kate's Joint. Either because of its gentrified location, overpriced Boca burgers, or displaced lower-class citizens, I never went. Nevertheless, my girlfriend finally convinced me.

Unfortunately, I was disappointed; the food was over-priced, boring, tasteless, and the waiter added tip to his already 20% tip. (Side Note: the waiter was one of the owners.)

For vegetarians and vegans that understand the complexities of tofu and seitan this place is not for you; Most of their food is pre-packaged Boca, Morningstar, and Nomeat products; which you could buy for a quarter of the cost at the KEYFOOD supermarket around the corner.
