What Our Expert Scouts Say

October 14, 2012

The last thing you expect a German restaurant to be is gay, wildly festooned with fake leaves, and a rollicking spot for pork chops and pickup lines. And yet that's just what Rolf's is.

worth the wait. We have repeatedly heard that this was the German restaurant to frequent.

The service was outstanding, the food very good and a great time had by all .

HIghly recommended and we will definitely return.

love it. I felt compelled to write, to dispel the scathing reviews here. I go to Rolf’s every January and always look forward to going back. Going on a weeknight has been comfortable and friendly. Although some would find the atmosphere kitschy I find it uniquely cozy and welcoming. Tonight the staff was sweet and accommodating. The hot mulled wine is special, also try the apple schnapps warrned with cinnamon.

The food is consistently reliable; I do prefer their mild saukerkraut and sausage sampler. It’s not 5 star by any means but I rate Rolfs 5star for the overall experience and atmosphere. The selection of 70s music is quite strange for this premises and it's perhaps overpriced, but generally a memorable evening.

Terrible service. We trekked in the snow from Soho to see the restaurant.

We wanted dessert and coffee. The waitress Ali was livid that we weren't interested in ordering lunch. Our dessert and coffee came to 40.83, I guess not enough for her. The Black forest cake was marginal the mulled wine was delish, but everything even the decor was ruined by such terrible service. We asked to speak with the manager, but were told he was not there. REALLY!! on a Saturday afternoon. Where was he out recruiting more rude servers?

I recommend that you walk by to see the decorations and keep going to eat someplace else.

don't bother-you can't eat decorations. Went here with 3 friends last weekend and will never return. Seems that the owners are just trading on the history of the place and counting on tourists coming to ogle the decorations. (Speaking of which, they are fancy but no longer fanciful. I remember when they had real charm.) Of course, always choose a restaurant for the food. The food here is awful. Our table order rohm and jaeger schnitzel. They were tough and bland under sauce that bordered on gooey. The strudel was good but not worth coming back for - good strudel can be had elsewhere where the entrees aren't so bad. The service was also clueless on several levels. One of our party asked that her entree be sauced lightly. The waiter explained that everything here is made in advance. When I asked for an anisette with my coffee, he said What is that? It was the weekend and very crowded but this place knows it gets crowded for the holidays - they just don't care to plan.

greatest trap ever seen , could be you end up in Jail. Have been there yesterday 19th Dec. 2010 and it was a nightmare, could prevent going to Jail.

Paid at least 100$ for 4 undefinable sausages which did´nt match the menue card, and 4 Beer. The kitchen is a pig-pit and the restrooms as well. Small sticky, overheated and a unfriendly staff.

Wether the beer nor the sausages have ever seen Bavaria I swear, because its my homeland.

The waiter was not satisfied with the tip and started a raid and violent attack to us outside on the stepwalk.

We pushed him away 2 times and the police and 1 wittnes appeared in the very next minute, it seemed totally prepared tu us. To prevent going to Jail we paid an extreme tip.

KEEP AWAY AND SAVE MONEY AND NERVES !!!

Everywhere is a better Place to dine for this 100 $ in Manhattan.

Worst German experience in NYC. I am a German who just moved to New York. To get good German food I went to Rolf German Restaurant, because I am living near by. I was so disappointed with the food AND the service.

The food did not came as it was promised, they served my rice instead potatoes without noticing me before and there was exactly NOTHING GERMAN about the food nor the service.

The menu looked promising but already doubtful, some of their dishes dont exist like that in Germany at all. Some you can find in a few locations in the South of Germany, but only there. I ordered a chicken with a paprika souse, vegetables and potatoes. I did not get any vegetables except 3 pepper stripes, nor did I get the potatoes, neither a paprika souse, I got a chicken swimming in fad which was spiced with pepper... and the chicken was way to dry and not tasteful at all.

And to the service: I have never gotten such a bad service neither in Europe nor here. The waiter was rude and he did not give us any change, after we were visibly disappointed with our dinner he just pretended we would give him a 40% tip and when we ask for change he got really angry and we needed to explain to him, why we want change and why we did not give him less money. The thought that we did not have a smaller bill did not made any sense to him.

I will just suggest everyone NOT TO GO THERE, my husband and I really had a terrible night there.

Bummer.. Such a bad experience. I second all the bum reviews lately. Fun decor, but just go for a drink, take a picture, and move on to somewhere else for dinner. The service is appalling, which has apparently been the case for a long time. Management should take a hint and step up the service level requirements. Ridiculous.

Save your money. The meal I had yesterday at Rolf Germain Restaurant was one of the worst I had in years.

The vegetable consumme was too salty; The vegies looked like the chef used a bag frozen peas, carrots and potato cubes. The loin of pork was dry and tasted as if had been in the refrig for a few days. The potato pancake was heavy and tasted like it came from a mix. All in all a horrible meal.

The place is very tired and dirty. The sink in the bathroom was a disgrace.
