This minute, no-frills lunch counter has, through decades of Manhattan metamorphosis, gone from being a place where you got tuna sandwiches to a landmark destination. And why not? Where else in New York can you get a lime rickey, an egg cream and a pastrami sandwich constructed to human proportions? It won't last forever, but while it does, this little sandwich shop offers a window back to a Manhattan that catered to working people--even on Fifth Avenue.
Wow. Vegetarian at this deli? Yes!

This really is surprising. I love chopped liver and the vegetarian versions I've had in the past are so *not* even close. Well, it's here. I can't believe it! Go grab it before they're out - I heard it's going to be a trial or a temp addition to the menu.

Furry dust encrusted residue on the balsamic dispenser

So we just had lunch here and it was so bad, I felt like I needed to take time out to create an account and write about my experience. Im a native New Yorker and I eat out all the time. A group of tourists were sitting near us and we felt like we had to, on behalf of all the good restaurants in the city, defend NY to try to mitigate the negative impact this craphole had on these poor innocent out of towners.
The service was horrible, the guy (white shirt, black pants, balding) practically dropped my spoon in front of me after he brought out my matzo ball soup, which was straight out of a can, except for this weird lump of what appeared to be a matzo ball in it. The house salad was a pile of wilting iceberg lettuce with a few green peppers, onions and tomatos in it. The dressing was an oil bottle and vinegar (in a sugar dispenser) along with a maple syrup container, which the waiter described as "balsamic stuff". The balsamic dispenser had crust with a nice layer of furry dust caked around the hole.
The ice for the beverages comes out of an orange industrial sized bucket (the kind that cement mix or paint thinner comes in) located in plain view on a counter in the back of the restaurant along the left wall. There was a sign inviting us to try to Potato Latkes which we tried to order, but they didnt have any on hand. My associate's grilled cheese and tomato on whole wheat instead came out on white toast, with the cheese barely melted (we could have peeled it off and had two intact slices of Kraft singles).
So as I said, from one who eats out often enough to differentiate between decent and disgusting, this place was pretty bad. How does a "sandwich shop" screw up a grilled cheese sandwich?
Basically a sh!thole. Im dumbstruck by all of these 5 star reviews. I suspect that they might have been posted by Eisenberg employees. Why does this rating system require you to give a one star minimum? Eisenberg, you owe me a star.

Best Pastrami Sandwhich in NYC!

After reading the reviews, I decided to visit Eisenberg's, as I was craving a pastrami sandwich. Well.....this was the best pastrami sandwich I ever had, and I have been to most of the so-called "pastrami palaces". It wasn't too lean, nor to fatty. Just perfect! Although the decor looks like it hasn't been updated (or cleaned) since 1929, so what! I also had a vanilla egg cream and some rice pudding, which were also superb. Best of all, I?m only 5 blocks away. Thanks Citysearch!

Eisenberg's egg cream is definitive--which means there's no egg and no cream. Don't ask why.
Parking:
Surprisingly, street parking is pretty easy on Fith Avenue.
