Poor Customer Service
by frx909 at Citysearch
Very poor customer service. Better to shop at Sur La Table for baking supplies...or even the kitchen area of any department store for basics (cookie cutters, baking mats). The staff here, including the owner, are very rude. They do not accept returns or issue store credit under any circumstances, but do not have this included on their receipts or tell customers upon purchase. There are hand written signs on the cash registers informing customers of their no-return policy, but if you fail to notice these signs, you are to blame. Future customers be warned!
Worst service in the city

The staff at this store is unusually rude. Perhaps there are management problems here, but I have been going to this store over many, many years & the experience has always been the same. Finally there are other places that carry much of what NY Cake & Baking has. I especially like Broadway Panhandler, which is now on 8th Street. They carry a lot of the cake decorating items as well as boxes for whatever size baked good you might be baking...and the staff is excellent. Sur La Table also has a lot of great baking gear at very good prices. At this point in time, there is no reason to go to NY Cake & Bake. They should probably stick to mail order, because they really aren't customer service oriented.
- Pros: They have a lot of stuff
- Cons: Lack of variety within a category; extremely poor customer service
Terrible. Rude. Horrible. Mean. Evil. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THESE PEOPLE.

I work in the food business and occasionally I find myself in the dilemma of having to go to this place. They do have a good selection and some hard to find stuff. When I do go I will search high and low in every nook and cranny of the store before I'll actually tuck my tail between my legs and go up to ask a question just to have the response barked at me. I always walk out of NY Cake and Bake wondering why I ever go there and vowing to NEVER go again. Unfortunately sometimes I simply have to for work. The funny thing is most people feel negatively about this place. You needn't look further than the reviews you can find online by googling them. People are treated horribly, rudely, hung up on, berated...and this is by the store's owner.
Recently I needed red cupcake liners for a photo shoot. They do have a good selection so I decided to bite the bullet and go. I looked online to see their hours, 10-6. OK, I had to head that direction anyway and planned my trip to get there before they closed. I get there at 5:45. I walk up, try to open the door, locked. I can see there are customers in the store. Through the tiny window in the door a large, bouncer looking dude says "we're closed!"
"But, it's 5:45. The hours on your sign say you're open til 6. Please, I know what I want, where it is, I'll be out before you close. Please."
"We're closed."
"Please, your hours say you're open til 6, it's not 6!"
This transaction went back and forth. I waited for him to open the door for a customer who was leaving and stuck my head in the door, asking to please let me in and if i could speak to the manager.
"We're closed" and he began closing the door on my foot. Lucky me I was wearing boots.
I never got my cupcake liners. I yelled some obscenities, I'm not proud. I'll never go back, this time I mean it. Someone please open a shop to run these jerks out of business. The model is simple - you treat your customers like human beings.
Worst business ever

I am very disappointed in this company. I have ordered from them several times with no problems. Until today. I have tried to access their website for a month but it doesn't work. And if you call the 800 number, you get cut off. Over a week ago I faxed my order in (I have a wedding cake to make on 7/26/08) and when I didn't receive it (I live in the same state!) I called today (not the 800 #). The guy that answered (NOT PROFESSIONAL AT ALL) sounded like I bothered him. He passes me to some lady that says they didn't receive my fax and that I should have called to make sure it went thru. Ok, so I asked if I could place my order thru her and she said yes. I gave her my order and she THEN tells me I have to spend a min of $50. Um are you kidding me? Before it was $10. I can see it going up a bit but $50? Don't think so. So I called another place I found online and the lady I spoke to was wonderful! She told me I would have my order within 4 business days. Do not, I repeat...DO NOT EVER order from NY Cake Baking Co. They are the worst and I will make sure to let everyone know how bad they are. I make a lot of wedding cakes and they just lost a good customer, not to mention all the people I tell. Word of mouth can be the best advertising or it can be a company's downfall. I hope this place falls flat on its butt. They need to take a few classes in customer service!
Rude Staff

I called to ask a question to see if they carry a certain product. The man answered the phone 'hello' so I wasn't even sure if I had the right place when I called the number. I said 'Is this NY Cake' and he said 'yes.' I was looking to get in touch with the store directly (as opposed to some warehouse) and I dialed the 800 number, so I wasn't sure where I called. So I said 'Is this the store?' and the man said 'What do you need maam?'. I said 'I was just wondering if I dialed the store directly and wasn't sure since you answered the phone 'hello' and he hung up on me! Of course when I called right back, I got the company voicemail. What a j*rk! Too many other options in NYC to give business to rude people.
