Such a shame.... This was once a great place - unpretentious and one of the best places to find a real butcher. It once was light on the boxed produce, had a large friendly butcher and specialty deli.

That Jefferson Market is gone.

It's now just a generic produce store. The butcher counter is gone, a smaller one is hidden far against the back wall and covered in very high shelves of boxed products. I'd gues 85-90% of their meats are plastic wrapped.

It's just such a shame. I found out when I left it is now owned by Gristedes, and it's as bland and pointless as your local bodega. If you happen to live a block or two from here, which for th most part I doubt you do, there is absolutely no reason to even walk in the doors.

the OLD Jefferson Market was great.... Jefferson Market WAS an really classy, friendly neighborhood grocery store offering high-quality food at reasonable prices. Less pretentious than the yuppie boutique stores, but much better food than you'll find at the big chains. It was really a touch of the old Village that managed to hang on until late last year. They shut down abruptly in the fall, but had a sign vowing they'd reopen.

My aunt, who's lived around the corner since the 1960s, says they've been bought by another grocery chain.

For now, I'm giving the "old" Jefferson Market a four-star review -- but may have to revise that based on how much the new owners have decided to ruin it. :(

Great Customer Service, Clean helpful and Friendly. Great place to shop. Found a great alternative with the same neighborhood grocer feeling. D'Agostino Supermarket on Univeristy Place. Just a short walk aross on 10th Street to University Place , located next to the Resouvior Bar. The staff is great Very friendly and attentive to your needs. The store is well stocked and clean. The lines are quick. They have a great S7H Shopping Program, Collect points and reddem them for geat priced items. Can save you money for the savy shopper. Use their On Line Shopping service, was quick and easy and save me lot's of time.

Excellent quality and customer service. Long ago, I wpuld catch sight of the great chefs like James Beard's assitant amd Craig Claybourne who lived in the Village, selecting food items to prepare their famous recipes, I figured, hey why not shop there too. I've been a customer for over thirty years and when fixing a special dish, i know who to call.

The meat is the best in the area. Tthe butchers and I have become friends over the years and know what I like.That's a real plus! The deli counter offers a tasty array of cooked and cold dishes. No need to cook tonight!

Comes the holiday feast's, the service is attentive.and will cater to your specific needs. Need a Cheese platter or a 20 pound turkey, they will have the best. They are the reason for the success of my gatherings, both large and small.

Thank you Jefferson Market for being right where you are!

Forget Whole Foods - come to where the heart is!. If you're ever in the area and you need something for dinner, stop in to get a Bell and Evans rotisserie chicken. It's the best roasted chicken I have ever had, and at under $8.00 for the whole thing (feeds three hungry people), you can get wonderful side dishes to complete your meal. They have wonderful meats as well as fresh produce that never fails to please.

my favorite in my 'hood. This is my choice for best grocery in the neighborhood. The produce and meat are of very good quality and they've got a better selection and variety of foods than Citarella.

A much-beloved West Village staple offers far more than just the basics.. The Scene
With all the gourmet specialty shops in Gotham, how has this one managed to stick around since 1929? Not because it has the absolute top-of-the-line products or the best bargains, but because it's a basic, reasonably-priced grocery store with just enough upscale treats to satisfy foodies.

The Goods
This is one gourmet place that doesn't fancy itself too cool to present an orange, marshmallow and shredded-coconut fruit salad in the same section that shows off the best of the fois gras. The front section is devoted to staples, but deeper into Jefferson Market lies its true bounty--nearly 20 varieties of fresh olives proudly displayed in glass jars, goose-liver pate, a long glass case full of freshly prepared salads, a meat counter, a fresh fish market and a cheese wing with a deeply pungent aroma. Catering and prepared platters are available for delivery.
