What People Are Saying About Red Cat

Featured Review

The Scene – Linens cover tables, yet half of the diners are sporting jeans; it's this comfortable balance that keeps couples on dates and friends grabbing a bite so enduringly loyal. Wine, well-built cocktails and cut radishes dipped in salt--clever bar snacks--attract solo diners and friends catching up to the bar. Service is smooth, warm and effortlessly capable. – – The Food – It's rare to find a neighborhood restaurant where the cooking is this good from start to finish. Roast quail arrives with an addictive mix of sausage, mushrooms and raisins in a lovely tomato…

Editor's Tips

What to Drink:
Drinkers who enjoy a touch of bitters should sample the bar's Cricket Ball--prepared with champagne, Lillet Rouge, bitters and a sugar cube. Wines are organized by categories such as "floral and herbaceous whites" and "spicy red wines."
The Extras:
Red Cat owner Jimmy Bradley also owns Tribeca's the Harrison.
ambiance
93.75% positive
  1. It epitomizes the atmosphere I love most: very homey and cozy, but light at the same time; casual and neighborly with a refined appeal to it; busy but not loud; very friendly staff.
  2. The food was superb, and the service and the ambience were not far behind.
  3. The appetizers were creative and interesting - the lobster with potato chips was a particularly fun and tasty combination of haute food with junk food - and the extensive wine list is stocked with solid, reasonably priced bottles.
  4. lively restaurant - fun place, the atmosphere is perfect for a great casual meal.
  5. decor/layout. I don't consider that a negative, but if you're looking for a very quiet place for romance, then you may be a little surprised by the decibel level (which I think is probably just the result of happy clientele).
  6. Great ambiance, attractive setting.
  7. Delicious food, attentive service, and perfect ambiance!
  8. This place is so warm and cozy, with such good food and a very friendly staff, its hard not to love this spot.
  9. Excellent food, wine and atmosphere in this small gem!
  10. As far as the atmosphere -- nice for the person facing into the restuarant, but really bad for the person facing the unattractive wall.
  11. The atmosphere is nice in a very understated way.
  12. Delightful place - great atmosphere!
  13. recommend this place for casual & romantic dates -as well as business dinners.

  17. The staff is warm and personable, the atmosphere is relaxing comfortable.
  18. Low key yet impressive atmosphere - all in all a great package.
  19. Quaint decor, fantastic staff (that bent over backwards for us), delicious cocktails and of course, the food, all contribute to a fantastic dining experience.
  20. Red Cat has a charming, rustic decor with an urbane menu.
  21. finally arrived, and they brought us to our table, which was in a cozy corner of the restaurant.
  22. The bar is fun and the crowd is from the neighborhood.
  23. It was casual with a great ambience.
  24. loved the cozy, warm, inviting atmosphere of the restaurant.

  38. great food
  39. This place is so warm and cozy, with such good food and a very friendly staff, its hard not to love this spot.
  40. Bottom line: our appetizers (saute of zucchini and fried oysters) were delectable; our entrees (wild striped bass and atlantic salmon) were a boring, dare I say "trite", and lacked the life that you expect a restaurant with such great praise to have.

Great Food & Exceptional Service

This restaurant is exceptional! The food, the service...you can't go wrong! The chef puts a twist to already traditional American dishes and it feels a lil' foreign but so close to home! I recommend this place for casual & romantic dates -as well as business dinners. TWO THUMBS WAY UP!

Food to Perfection

by kara nortman

Maybe I have been living outside of the food mecca of nyc for too long, but I was blown away by my relatively simple, incredibly well prepared meal at Red Cat.

I started with the frisee salad with egg - I can never resist an egg on any non-breakfast meal, but this egg was poached to the ideal amount of "runnyness" to spice up the frisee and bacon accents. Then the salmon.. ooh the salmon was crisped, grilled and flavored to a crescendo with the first slice of the fork. I tried to resist dessert, but was lured into sharing a chocolate bread butterscotch bread pudding that was worth the impact to my waistline. All in all, a must try.

  • Pros: Every course is excellent
  • Cons: A little bit loud, but still intimate and lively

neighborhood favorite

by openroad75

As a New Yorker who dines out several times a week, it's so refreshing to find a restaurant that continues to make the grade over and over. I've been a fan for many years and have turned on many friends and business associates to this not-so-hidden gem. On a recent visit my wife, who is notoriously hard to please, had a perfectly braised lamb. I opted for their signature pork chop which is maybe the best I've had. The staff is always warm, smart and professional. We know we're in good hands with their recommendations and they've taken the time to get to know our preferences over the years. Hat's off to the cat!!!

  • Pros: consistently impressive food & service

Good, but I've had better for less money.

by yippee1999

I had been to Red Cat twice before, around the Summer of 2007 perhaps. Both times I really loved the entire experience...the food, the ambiance...

I went again in January of '09 with a friend. I got the beet salad appetizer, which was "good"...nothing spectacular, but then, beet salads are pretty basic. My friend got the pierogi appetizer which I tried, and it was scrumptious.

For the entree I got the double-cut pork chop. While the chop itself was very good, I found the choose of accompanying vegetables (pieces of romaine, slices of radish, gigantes (or large white beans) and feta cheese, to be "odd". I wasn't crazy over it.

My friend got the salmon dish, and while I didn't try it, she seemed to enjoy it.

For dessert, I got the semi-freddo. I consider myself a dessert connoisseur, and I must say it was totally decadent and delicious, and the warm chocolate sauce was of a very good quality.

The ambiance of the restaurant was nice. For a Saturday night, reservations were definitely needed as the place was full.

However, considering I paid $80 (which included the tip) for an appetizer, entree, dessert, wine, and coffee, I've had meals that were just as good at similar level restaurants, for about $20 less. So I'm not sure I would see any reason to return....
