The Scene
This Meatpacking District icon, which opened in 1868, fits the caricatured ideal of a steakhouse to an almost laughable degree. Men exceed women by a 20-to-1 ratio, black-and-white photos of New York adorn the walls, and waiters consist of a gruff cast of apron-wearing, middle-aged men. It's not quite as big as it used to be, though, since losing the lease to the space adjacent to the dining room; but its existing space bigger, adding fireside tables, a steakhouse bar upstairs, and a private dining room, all in the same atavistic style.

The Food
The amount of food served at the Old Homestead seems almost suited for an uber-class of human carnivore. Appetizers are huge, bare-bones affairs: a half head of iceberg lettuce drenched in blue cheese, a plate of tomatoes and onions so large they look like they grew in the shadow of a nuclear reactor. The dry-aged steaks run the gamut from an 18-ounce boneless sirloin to a two-pound rib eye to a ferocious-looking $60 porterhouse for two. It may not be the very best beef known to man, but it may be the biggest.

The place looks great, the food was consistent but the service was awful. I was there several times over the summer and it appeared as if they had turned the corner on their service issues. Lets hope it was just a bad night because the location is great the the place has been wonderfully transformed physically.

I have been dining at Old Homestead for many years and, although the food is always first rate, the service can be a bit shoddy. On a recent visit with a large group during the holiday season I was very surprised to see that one of our favorite waiters was now employed at OH. We knew him as JC when he took care of us at Mark Joseph downtown but he jokingly advised me that at OH he is simply known as John. It was great to see him. He is a character and a truly wonderful hospitality professional. Even though he mentioned to us that he may be a casualty of staffing issues in the near future, I do hope to see him there again. OH is definitely taking a step in the right direction when it comes to service with more hires like John. See you soon JC.

Every year my parents give me and my siblings tickets to a Broadway show. We make our dinner stop at the Old Homestead. Last year we tried Smith & Wollensky's and we were extemely disappointed that we didn't go back to the Homestead. I will never stray again! The price for the food is worth every dollar. When you want to treat yourself to a "excellent steak dinner", Homestead is the only way to go.

The Extras:

It's a gimmick, but the $41 hefty burger made of Kobe-style beef is a delicious, ridiculous indulgence. It comes with decent shoestring fries, but don't bother: You'll need all the room you can muster to get your money's worth.
