“The brunch here is tasty enough but the portions are small.”
I worked here, it's awesome.. I was a waitress at E&C for six months recently, and I loved it. It is such a cute and cozy place, and the regulars that come in almost every day give you that "Cheers" feeling (everyone knew my name and I knew theirs). One of the perks of working there - a free meal per shift. So, having tried most of the menu, I can honestly say the food is delicious! I miss all those nights having a free Lime & Coriander Chicken entree, or the Smoked Chicken Sandwich. I still have cravings for the Chinois dressing on the Sauteed Shrimp Salad, and have since asked the manager if I can buy a container to bring home. All the ingredients in their food choices are fresh and different. Truly a pleasure to work for them, especially the management who I'd have to say are the nicest bosses I've ever had. I sincerely love this place and pop in often.
Elephant & Castle.
I have been going to the Elephant & Castle for about 20 years. A friend took me there and I've been going there ever since. It's my favorite restaurant. Everytime I bring a friend they love it and want to go back. The food is really fresh and different...I especially love their baby cesar salad and their bananna foster crepes and the coffee ice cream with raspberries and fudge. And they always have wonderful specials. Their tee shirts are really neat too.
The staff is always friendly and in all the times I've eaten there (every chance I get to go into the Village) I have never had a bad meal.
It is a really great place to eat whether breakfast, lunch or dinner. The prices are right and it is not a commercial restaurant...you get the flavor of the Village. I very highly recommend it.
Wonderful neighborhood place that is always a great choice. I have been going to this place for over 15 years now and it never lets me down. The wait staff are all pleasant and helpful and the food is always great. You can have a quiet lunch or breakfast alone here or dine with friends. The salads and omelettes are always good. I have always had wonderful experiences here and have many fond memories of dinners, lunches, breakfasts, and brunches here. Go and you will be well taken care of!
Warm, quiet, cozy, and best bang for your buck. This place offers a diverse menu with tasty sandwiches, salads, and burgers, and surprisingly, excellent entrees! I had a catfish special recently, which was presented artfully and was even more delicious than it looked. I was delighted to find that you can enjoy high-quality food at half the price of many fancier restaurants, AND feel like you're eating in a cozy, intimate English pub. Perfect for a wintry night.
Best Brunch in the City. Elephant Castle has the best brunch menu in the city. Simple and tasty, this is what the Village is supposed to be all about. The seating is limited, but the family-like, nonpretensious staff seems to always make everyone comfortable. The drinks and food are delicious and served with care. You can not go wrong at this restaurant.
A New York City Classic. I ate at the E&C for the first time about a year ago and have been back at least once a month. There's something I can only describe as 'old-school' charming about the place. It woody, oddly shaped and very cozy. The wait staff is young and friendly. The bathroom is through kitchen. The burgers are excellent and most of the other dishes are pretty good too. I view it as the quintessential Village restaurant - no Upper East Side frat boys, no Upper West Side families and NO Meat Packing district B&T's. A New York restaurant for New Yorkers.
Quiet during the holiday. Oddly enough the night that we went to dinner here the place was pratically empty. We did arrive at about 9:30 PM and had wonderful service. Our waiter was very gracious and friendly. The music playing added to the atmosphere. So the next time we go out late for dinner we'll be back. Oh and the menu is varied and has great options.
A neighborly eatery that mixes luncheonette staples with downtown charm..
In Short
Elephant & Castle is the quintessential New York "casual" restaurant. Squeezed into a narrow, dark-varnished wood room, it's the kind of place where you can read a newspaper without overstaying your welcome or chat late into the evening with a friend. The fare is simple and straightforward, with dishes such as Caesar salad, omelets and burgers. The sandwiches, including smoked chicken with roasted garlic and horseradish mayonnaise, have a serious fan base.
a favorite!. i love this cozy little place and they have great food and make a fabulous omelette!!! Service here is very young but accomodating and i am never disappointed, which makes me come back again and again for more
Small burgers, big buns. The burgers are terrible! Ordered medium rare, they came out dry and well done. My friend had been coming here for years, and noted that the burgers had gotten smaller. When we asked the waitress, she said the burgers were the same size, but the buns are now bigger! I don't think so. The service was sporadic and with attitude. Not at all recommended.
