Great and inexpensive Spanish Food – Such a relief to enter La Taza del Oro, surrounded as it is by a slew of designer and precious restaurants along 8th Ave verging on Chelsea neighborhood.
Its been there for years, the food is authentic down home Puerto Rican, with different daily specials. Prices range from $2.00 for flan, plantanas to $8.00 on average for a large portion of rice and beans and a choice of meat (try the pork chops, the chicken, oh everything) , fish (not the fried fish which is too breaded) or mofongo. Very very tasty food and terrific coffee.
Now they have added art work to the walls. This month a terrific artist is showing acrylic on canvas city scapes. All paintings $75 and they are very good. Recommended.
Best Pigs feet in the city – Love this place!
Hasn't changed in all this years. I always get the pigs feet or the oxtail. Always delicious and plentyfull.
Also what a value, can't beat it here!
"Quintessential Latino" – You don't have to be Puerto Rican to eat here but if your a blanquito gringo it doesn't hurt to bring a friend from San Salvador to give some credibility! The same daily specials are available every day. The food is all good. They don't fool around with the portions--- I'm sure they don't eat like this in those underdeveloped latino countries--God Bless America. Come flacco leave gordo!
Not Much To Look At But Food For Days! – I've been coming to La Taza de Oro for decades. When I lived in Manhattan, it was a once a week thing. Or even more when a friend would bring takeout to me at work. It's latino comfort food. Not much to look at, but plenty to eat. As others have mentioned, the rice and beans can feed a family of four. Don't even think about cleaning your plate. They'll have to roll you down 8th avenue afterwards. It's classic Puerto Rican / Dominican home cooking. Pork dishes to die for. Steaks, soup, plantains. All yummy! The decor has been the same for as long as I can remember. Cheap, good, and plentiful!
Puerto Rican food at it's best! – I loved the atmosphere, service and food. I have to correct some who have said it's a Dominican and Spanish restaurant. This is pure Puerto Rican, including the owner! The decorations are very 1960's which adds to the vintage feel, and the location is great as well. I have to say I've missed the authentic Puerto Rican spots, we don't have enough these days. I can't wait to bring all my friends here!
Editorial Review – There's a different menu for every day of the week at this largely Spanish and Dominican diner.
Good food, average service – This is a good place to get a nice, quick meal. Their Rice and Beans side dish is to die for. The meat portion of the meal can leave something to be desired, but overall, a great place to pick up a quick lunch or dinner.
Taza Forever – I want to get "Taza de Oro" tattooed onto my body. That's how great this place is. And the decor is an acid flashback to 1962, if you're into that sort of thing (I am).
my little heaven – la taza de oro has the food of oro (gold) i have been eating at the counter since 1962 and it was like a second home to me the people have changed over the years but not the food, the food has remain muy bueno after all these years there breaded steak with there minced garlic is f.o the yellow rice and beans always fresh after noon taste better after a few hours and the price? where else can a family of four eat for thirty or so bucks don't miss out on this resturant.
Another mainstay falls... – This place used to be fabulous. Living with a PR who cooks fabulous food, it was nice having an authentic place nearby that didn't insult the clientel who know the cuisine. That has all changed and the place has evidently changed hands. Last time, the Mondongo was not very good at all and this was one of my favorite dishes.
