The Scene – North Square's discreet, sedate decor appeals to the largley older crowd occupying the dining room whilst a younger set parties in the back bar. The lowish ceiling and garden-apartment view of passing feet has claustrophobic potential, but warmth of service and environs makes it cozy instead. – – The Food – The kitchen here loves to impress with cleverly combined, carefully wrought dishes. A chopped salad, incorporating fresh beans, tomatoes, enoki mushrooms, cress and quail eggs is beautifully presented and excitingly complex. A platter of merguez and…

Please Please Please go try this place. I am hands down saying, I had the best meal of my life here. Everything from the atmosphere, specialty drinks, unique menu, amazing food and service was right on. I have never seen such a flavorful menu with items I have never heard of or things that were paired together so well. The menu was impeccable but to be honest I can't even remember the unique Ingredience that were in my pork tenderloin but I do remember the chocolate mousse cake . Everyone in the restaurant seemed to be puckering their lips with astonishment. I will be counting the days when I can eat here again.

I was embarrassed by my decision to take friends there for brunch.

I have always had pleasant experiences at North Square - decent food, nice atmosphere, etc. However, all of that changed on Sunday 9/21/2008. With a few friends, I arrived for a 12:30 PM brunch reservation. The hostess was most friendly and we were soon seated. However, our waiter barely paid us any attention. After getting our first cups of juice and coffee, it was nearly impossible to get a refill. We asked for a few items to be brought out early to nosh - even after asking multiple times, most of the appetizer items were either forgotten or brought out at the same time as the meal. And then there was the food... the pumpkin pancakes were barely palatable. The challah french toast was literally a few pieces of soggy bread. The only redeeming parts of the meal were the bacon, the bagel and cream cheese, the potatoes, and the fruit salad (basically things that just required minimum preparation). I have never had such a bad brunch experience in NYC - whether this was just an off-day or it is indicative of a larger problem at North Square, I cannot say. I can say that I will never go back there again. When our waiter finally arrived with the bill, I had to remind him which items, which were listed on the bill, never made it to our table.
- Pros: cute location, warm, sunny brunch environs
- Cons: bad food, bad service.
Great Wine List

Wow. I met a friend here for oysters and drinks recently and we ended up staying the whole night. We sat at the bar, we had cocktails, wine, oysters, and then decided to try a couple of entrees too. The thing that compelled me to write a review is that I've been here before. I used to attend NYU, it's in the neighborhood and was always a good work horse type of spot for a bar. Dropping in for the first time in a looonnnggg time, I've noticed some changes...for the better. Service has stepped it up big time and the wine list is so much more thoughtful, affordable and interesting.
- Pros: Wine, Oysters
- Cons: Not romantic
