  1. If you want family style Italian, this is not for you- their dishes are generally nicely proportioned so that you can still enjoy an appetizer and/or dessert, but it's not about quantity here.
  2. highly recommend the anchovy vegetable dip, sliced duck entree, and warm chocolate cake.
  3. went with a group of 5 ppl and until 4 of us finish the main course and ready to order the dessert, my poor friend's main course didn't arrive.
  4. The flan that we ordered for dessert was also great.
  5. The pasta was delicious, the salad fresh and crisp, and the dessert heavenly.

  1. also agree w/ everyone that the spaghetti tossed in a parmesan wheel w/ basil & thin sliced prosciutto is good as well as their minestrone soup.
  2. The salmon pasta dish I got wasn't great either.
  3. The mushroom, mussel, duck and squid appetizers were tasty, as was the pasta made at the tableside.
  4. went there last night for dinner and had a great meal.
  5. The filet mignon with foie gras is delicious, but a little heavy, I suggest sharing that with others.
  6. Our waiter was very tending seeing that we enjoy our meal
  7. The food is TERRIFIC.
  8. I'm surprised that they have also learnt to cook good authentic Italian cuisine.
  9. Went back with a friend from out of town, and again we were served with the most delicious fusion of Italian Japanese, or Italian, depending on the dishes you order.
  10. Great solid food with great staff!
  11. Though I wouldn't recommend you go for the Italian food, if you want to take a group of friends to a clean and decent tasting restaurant in the Union Square area this is it.
  12. However, the lamb chops were quite good.
  13. The food was good, the price was nice, and the space is a nice twist on the open kitchen concept.
  14. Doesn't matter if you're Japanese trying to play fusion, but failing miserably and just making overrated Italian food, show some common decency and humanity.
  15. Fantastic food.
  16. The ingredients are fresh, which means terrific sauces.
  17. Great service, fabulous food and great art work!
  18. Another all time favorite is the parmagiano reggiano pasta with prosciutto, they prepare the pasta in half wheel of cheese tableside.
  19. My bf ordered the Ravioli di Vitello, Prosciutto e Mozzarella (veal, prosciutto and mozzarella cheese ravioli with fresh tomatoes in Parmesan sauce) which I tasted and I am definitely trying the next time I go, too bad the portion wasn't so big but at lea
  20. Some dishes are tastier than others (I love the tender baby crispy chicken).
  21. The price is moderate and the food is always tasty.
  22. really love the pasta with cheese from the cheesewheel.
  23. enjoyed the food the first time so i went back with a big group of people.
  24. thought the food was excellent (particularly the spaghetti dish that they prepare at your table), but if you're not Asian, the waiter practically ignores you.
  25. And speaking of bread, the service here is absolutely excellent.
  26. Very nice food but no volume.
  27. agree with the other reviews, the food was nice, but nothing special.
  28. What a wonderful combination of Italian food and Japanese service.
  29. would highly recommend the Uni pasta if you are a fan of sea urchin, although sometimes there are misses when the sea urchin is not as fresh as it should be.
  30. Great service, great food
  31. Blah food, bad service.
  32. Wonderful atmosphere, decor, and food.
  33. True the portions are huge "super-sized" plates, but the food is very well balanced, beautifully presented.
  34. The spaghetti with sea urchin sauce were delicious, and with a friend we tried different appetizers, all inventive, all good.
  35. Though at one point I had to hold back extreme laughter, I enjoyed my food and my experience.
  36. For Japanese, the food tastes pretty good.
  37. Their dishes are great, decor is clean & simple and love their open kitchen.
  38. For those who appreciate fresh ingredients and truly wonderful cooking, this is the place for you.
  39. The service is really bad, even though food is not bad.
  40. Great food, not so great service
  41. The pasta was delicious, the salad fresh and crisp, and the dessert heavenly.
  42. with its japense influence, the pasta is fresh and light.
  43. Even the salad dressing is great.
  44. My friend (who had the same dish before) took one bite of his clam pasta and stopped, saying the clams were bad, pungent odor right up his nose.
  45. The spaghetti with flying fish roe and the spaghetti with shrimp were not remarkable, and I am told the steak wasn't memorable either.
  46. Portions are medium at best; there definitely are better values for good Italian food in the City.
  47. The food was excellent and the service was attentive and polite.
  48. Come to think of it he was rather stubborn about it -- all he said was that he gets fresh clams every day.
  49. The pastas are quite good, but are prepared firmer in most dishes than al dente, so be aware of this if you like softer pasta.
  50. All that said, the food is fairly good.
  51. If you want family style Italian, this is not for you- their dishes are generally nicely proportioned so that you can still enjoy an appetizer and/or dessert, but it's not about quantity here.
  52. Try it out and judge for yourself but the food is good anyway you look at it.
  53. Above average food at reasonable prices, but service isn't great.
  54. Goes to show you that great food is never enough.
  55. Although food is good, his comments made a bad taste in our mouth.
  56. The food was excellent, Service was one of the best i had in NYC yet.

  3. Although Basta Pasta is not your typicial "hearty" Italian family restaurant, it is my absolute favorite restaurant in New York.

  11. Blah food, bad service.
  12. What a wonderful combination of Italian food and Japanese service.
  13. Basta Pasta is a great place to come with a friend or a group of people.
  14. had always associated Japanese with good service, so this was a huge disappointment.
  15. thought the food was excellent (particularly the spaghetti dish that they prepare at your table), but if you're not Asian, the waiter practically ignores you.
  16. Above average food at reasonable prices, but service isn't great.
  17. worked in a restaurant business for over 7 years, so I know how stressful it is, and I was a manager once, but I never made that kind of rude comments to my customers!
  18. Great service, fabulous food and great art work!
  19. The Japanese know how to deliver good service.
  20. We were a party of four, but two of them came in late, by 20 - 30 min., I understand that the manager must rotate tables and need to accommodate later reservations, but he made a couple of nasty and sarcastic comments!
  21. You really can tell how good / bad a service is when something goes wrong.
  22. The waitstaff is attentive and kind, true to the Japanese standards of service.

Wonderful!

by Food Mission

This place is really great! Reservations would be a good idea. The atmosphere is very modern, trendy, Asian. The staff is surprisingly nice. There is also a pretty large group of loyal customers, which I have always found to be a good recommendation for a place. The pumpkin gnocchi is fabulous! The lavender gelato would have been great without the odd jelly globs mixed in (unnecessary and distracting). Side note, my friend ordered the Cesar salad...it is an intact head of romaine lettuce with the ingredients of the salad separately situated on the plate...I would not have been pleased with this. I do not understand this new trend of serving unprepared salads. Isn't half of the point of going to a restaurant so that you don't have to do the prep work?

Italian Perfection

by JacquelineFusaro , Citysearch Contributor

This place is unbelievable. Every single time! They make the simple classic dish of spaghetti into a masterpiece by tossing the pasta in a hollowed parmesan reggiano wheel, topped with prosciutto. The cheese coats every strand of spaghetti! The asparagus appetizer was cooked perfectly and pleased even the most anti-vegetable person at the table. What makes this Italian restaurant stand out from the rest, is the Japanese flare on some of the dishes!

  • Pros: Spaghetti, Lamb, Asparagus, Etc.!
  • Cons: Always packed!

Amazing! Simply amazing!

Where do I begin?

Service was great, very attentive without being over-bearing. The waiters are super-polite and helpful. The ambience is very nice and romantic. I would recommend reservations because this place does get filled up quickly. The food was, well small, especially for the price. But once you bite into it, you're willing to fork over twice as much. Fresh and delicious! The seafood pasta was done just right without being smothered in sauce, the mussels were some of the best I have ever tasted, and you can't beat the giant wheel of cheese that your pasta arrives in.

I wish I could eat here every day of the week because I doubt I'll ever get tired of it.
