so long Antiques Garage

Used to go to the flea markets in the outdoor parking lots along 6th Ave, now there are large residential buildings where the markets were.Now the news is that the Garage will be closing at the end of the month (Aug 2011) Fortunately the Showplace Antique Center at 40 W 25 st looks like it will stay for many more years. The Showplace has some wonderful dealers with an interesting assortment of stuff. My favorite dealer is Waves featuring vintage electrical and mechanical apparatus. (old radios, windup phonos and other interesting things)

NYC's best flea

This is a 2-floor parking garage, literally. But on weekends it's the flea market, and it's the best one in NYC. In addition to the usual vintage and antique stuff, there are items here that you're not going to find as often at outdoor markets where they might get rained on or whatever, like more prints and art; more silver.

It can be a bit chilly in the winter and hot in the summer. Remember, it's a GARAGE, not a department store. But, for me it's so cool to get one of a kind or unusual things for home or office that are conversation-starters. Fleas are also "green"--buy a bit of history instead of some newly mass-produced something from China.

Excellent selection of antiue dealers

We have been setting a booth at The Garage for several years. Travelling from Uruguay 3 or 4 times a year to set up at the Garage may sound crazy but it was always good for us. Excellent level of clientele and coleague dealers, great service in spite of being a garage. Excellent place Next June 21/22 we will be there . Valino Antiques
