A KNITTING ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL
by SUE FINGER
Two years ago i wanted to make a poncho for my nine year old granddaughter and was referred to Gotta Knit. I went with some trepidation to learn how to knit and after a half hour lesson with Goldie I realized my concern was real, but I had the positive hands-on backing of both Goldie and Laura
Four scarves, five cowls, three sweaters and yes, one poncho later I am a knitter. This was a direct result of the skills, support and encouragement that I received from Goldie and Laura.
They were available for whatever problem I encountered and encouraged me to come to the store whenever I was being challenged or just come and knit.
The sweaters I've made reflect the style aspects that I wanted, such as a boat shaped neck, and Laura's instructions and advice made it possible. Their sense of design and combinations of colors and textures influenced me to turn out what I think are just smashing knitted goods. The beautiful yarns are a constant inspiration to knit another sweater, scarf, summer shell and on and on.
BEST KNITTING STORE IN NYC
by linda vojtova
If you're looking for a custom/fit to your body garment, this is the ONLY place in NYC to go to. I have been a customer of Gotta Knit for the past 8 years. I love the very selective assortment of yarns, that they carefully pick out. They carry beautiful, high end luxury yarns, that are difficult to find in any other yarn store in NYC.
I read some of these other reviews and feel very strongly about the quality of service and education here. They're talents and success seem to created a large following of admirers and some jealous individuals. To be expected. From what I understand Gotta Knit has had hundreds of customers in the past few years. If you aren't creating a stir..then you must not be talented. Laura and Goldie are one of the most creative knitting designers out there.
Horrible treatment
by NLSmith
Horrible experience: IDENTICAL to many on Yelp (I'm not sure why they have rec'd good reviews on City search--friends posting, maybe!?). I sure hope the owners of the store are reading these reviews. In particular, Laura's attitude and customer service is horrible. Be prepared to be spoken down to and treated very poorly. I used a Groupon at this store and found the entire experience to be terrible. The lesson was indeed about 15 min of her time; the supplies are expensive. The way they speak to you is incredibly rude and dismissive. Probably the worst treatment I've ever received ANYWHERE, in any retail or hospitality (ie restaurant or hotel) exchange. I'm pretty patient with people's personalities and quirks, but Laura's rudeness pushed me past my limit. I'll NEVER go back and I'm feeling pretty wary of Groupon deals now, as well. I hope this review helps other potential customers-- be prepared to be treated terribly, or go elsewhere. There are plenty of lovely knitting shops-- with far more beautiful supplies and kind human interaction in NYC.
Gotta Knit

I thought that I had found the most wonderful yarn shop ever. Boy was I ever wrong! I saw a knitted garment and asked Goldie - who appeared to be so wonderful at the time- for the pattern. She said that if I want the pattern I must purchase the yarn.....I purchased a yarn that had 12 balls tied together. She then told me that she writes the pattern specific to clients measurements and would mail the pattern to me piecemeal. I told her that I wanted all of it at one time. Supposedly I may need lessions to complete the garment -according to her...I told her that I wouldn't need any and I would like the patten sent to me in it's entirety. (I have been knitting everything for over 30 years). She reluctantly agreed but told me that I need to knit a swatch with 5 of the balls and mail it to her so that the pattern would be specific to me. I went home and in the presence of someone else knit the swatch to approximately 4 1/2 stitches/inch.....bound off my swatch not cutting any of the balls of yarn off. What I got back approximately 2 wks later was NOT the swatch that I had knit. That swatch was unbound and knit to a guage of approximately 3 stitches per inch. My swatch had been cut off.....oh yes....I measured yardage.. The supposed pattern SPECIFIC TO ME that she sent me had a guage written on top of 3.85 st./inch with a note that said the rest of the pattern would be mailed to me the following week. The first page was a copy of sloppily hand written notes with filled in blanks for cast on, row amts, etc. The second page had none of the blanks filled in......even though the guage was totally wrong to begin with. Do you think that I ever received the rest of the pattern even though it was all wrong to begin with? You guessed it.....it's been a month. I had initially planned on going back 2-3 times per year to purchase yarn and get another pattern because she did have some nice ones......I will give her that..........but as for ever going back again.....and recommending her.....I DON'T THINK SO. If someone I know asks me where to go for yarn in Manhattan......I will tell them to go anywhere else BUT there because they are very unprofessional and then I will relate my experience with them. Wish I could have said nice things about them and I would have.....but what Goldie did was just NOT NICE.
My Home Away From Home
by lizsuh38
Where to begin? The two owners of Gotta Knit, Laura and Goldie, truly make the shop feel like my home away from home. I took a knitting lesson with them in October of 2010 and fell in love with it about a minute into the lesson. Now if a day passes without my having knitted at least one stitch I feel as if something is missing.
Laura and Goldie are both great teachers. Not to mention, very patient and encouraging. They are both more than willing, and even better, enthusiastic about helping you decide on a project, finding just the right yarn and of course the best color combinations. I must say the ladies truly have a knack for mixing the right colors together. They have helped me to go outside my comfort zone and experiment with many different colors.
And their claim to fame? Custom written patterns! There have been many times where I have fallen in love with a yarn at their shop but was unsure what to do with it. But fear not! Laura and Goldie to the rescue! They help me come up with a project, measure me and write me out a pattern that is custom made for me. Not only that but they are more than generous in helping you with your project along the way.
I could go on and on about all the wonderful and great things about Laura, Goldie and Gotta Knit but I think I've made my stance quite clear. Simply put, I love the ladies and the shop. Laura and Goldie are my knitting gurus!
