Editorial Review for TLA Video--CLOSED – by Steven Boone

The Scene
With five stores in Philadelphia and one in Manhattan, TLA has a long, epic history. It grabbed its name from the Theater of the Living Arts experimental group of the '60s, which included then-future stars like Sally Kirkland and Danny DeVito. The theater turned into Philadelphia's top repertory film house before it switched to the video business in the '80s.

The Goods
Like its Philly sisters, the New York outlet is staffed by incredibly knowledgeable young film fanatics--"half are actors, the other half students," says manager Katherine Shaifer--and they maintain an exhaustive catalog. The TLA website rivals the Internet Movie Database for comprehensiveness, with absurdly specific genre categories like "Bolivia" and "Danny Elfman." TLA also has a huge gay and lesbian selection.

Great selection of all movies, including international, animation You have come to the front and ask the attitudinous clerks which movies are actually available for checkout (ie the boxes don't get removed from the display when the movies get rented out). Open till midnight every day. Great place with a New York twist.

Pros: Selection, Time open

This is an excellent video store! The selection is great (organised by country, genre, actor, director...) and the people working there know more about what you want to see than you do. I only wish that they had more locations in New York.

Pros: selection, service

Cons: only 1 location
