“Good service and great prices.”
“Good service and great prices.”
NYC's prime venue for modern dance birthed a whole arts neighborhood..
Making History
In 1979, choreographer Eliot Feld and arts entrepreneur Cora Cahan snatched up the Elgin Theater for a song. Then architect Hugh Hardy redesigned the dilapidated blue movie house as an art deco hall of dance. The Chelsea renaissance promptly followed. Cahan moved on to repeat the porno-to-palace magic with uptown's New Victory.
Thriving in the Present
The 472-seat space boasts top-notch sightlines. And while the tiny backstage area limits set design options--and necessitates a techie in the wings to catch dancers speeding offstage,--most companies compensate for lack of fly space by using an indentation in the rear brick wall. John Kelly memorably filled it with lemons! Far from sour, this place just gets sweeter each year since its construction in 1942.
Deserves better rating. This is an excellent theatre. It is small in comparison to others but it is cozy. Great modern dance performances. Good service and great prices.
