The Scene
The modest-looking bakery is one of New York's great landmarks. With appearances in innumerable films, photographs and paintings during its eight-decade existence, the green, stenciled facade of this Prince Street fixture has come to symbolize an Old World/New York craftsmanship only scarcely evidenced in Soho's current rash of chain store hegemony.
The Goods
The bakery lovingly churns out the kind of handcrafted, heart-wrought bread that's kept Vesuvio in business since your granddad was a kid. You won't find any fancy multi-grain, nut-studded loaves here-it's all about the classics. The pepper rings, biscuits and crusty Italian loaves here are as good as you're ever going to get, and Vesuvio's old-school ambience and artisanal values are something to be treasured.

This is an old school Italian bakery, right in the middle of Soho. The breads are proudly displayed in the window, creating a picturesque scene. In fact, the window is often the subject of photographers selling their photographs along Broadway. There are a precious few seats inside for those wishing to eat in. Take out also available.

Great food, great NYC-style service. The gals who work there are hilarious and give us a dose of NYC accents and great laughs. I love taking my family there when they're in town, and I often have them deliver one of their great omelettes and fantastic lattes. Good prices, highly recomended.

I have been frequenting Vesuvio's now for more than 25 years and while my other favorite Soho haunts have given way to flashy boutiques and overpriced Tourist-oriented fare, this remains a neighborhood gem. The Coffee is among the best in the city - offering frothy lattes and rich creamy espressos with a smile. The lunchtime Chicken Pesto sandwich on Vesuvio's own Ciabatta rolls takes me right to Rome in one bite. Though the shop is too small for a business lunch it is great for reading the paper or having a romantic tete-a-tete. The longtime staff remembers its regulars and rewards even new clients with a nod, a smile and sometimes intimate details of their personal lives. (Solicited or not ;-)
