Editorial Review for Comme des Garcons – by Minya Quirk
The Scene
Fabulous fashion forwardness lies beyond the shiny steel, pipe-like funnel entrance that is the door to the only Comme des Garcons store in the States. The building is old and charming, but the interior is nothing but new, with huge sweeping abstract shapes that cut the space into little rooms and sections. Devotees of the avant-garde fashion scene come here to be inspired by minimalism with a touch of the absurd.
The Goods
Comme des Garcons is known for pushing the fashion envelope and creating wearable clothes that look more like the art on the walls of neighboring galleries than anything you'll ever find at the Gap. Clothes are displayed in requisite sparse form, hanging from curved racks or stacked neatly on shelves. Expect odd color and fabric combos--and steep price tags to match. Don't miss the great unisex fragrances and occasional, unpredictable kid's clothing.

Art as fashion, fashion as art -- COMME des GARCONS. It might not be everyone's taste, but you can't disagree that Rei Kawakubo influences the fashion world. The clothes and the accessories are always unexpected and impeccable, as well as the interior design. But the sales staffs got to re-train and they better have a lesson from the sales staffs from Japan. If you want better services, you got to spend.
Pros: Master pieces, Subtle location, Great design
Cons: Not-so-nice staffs, A bit expensive

Admirers of Comme des Garcons designs will shop here despite the fact that the service is horrendous. The staff would do well to take a page from their colleagues in Japan; there the service at CDG is impeccable and shopping is a pleasure. Here the pleasure is to be had from the goods but certainly NOT from the employees, who handle each transaction with unabashed distaste. Still, the clothes are awesome and the store's design is as well.
Pros: great clothes, cool design, off-beat location
Cons: awful staff, high prices
