Blame Canada..
The Scene
Occupying the prime real estate that straddles Nolita and Soho, Roots sits on the corner of Prince and Lafayette in an airy space that could just as easily sell mid-century furniture, or expensive shoes. Instead, this Canadian brand hawks reasonably priced leather goods.
The Goods
Roots is at its best when knocking off something a bit better: The pseudo-Marc Jacobs bags and the Hermes Birkin-shaped totes aren't going to fool a fashionista, but they don't look bought on the street either. We've seen Burberry-esque plaid, plus a slew of separates that seem to channel Club Monaco. Decently priced leather trenches for men, tweedy trousers for the ladies, that sort of thing. When Roots goes sporty, it's in the "let's put our logo on everything" spirit, which may work for Phat Farm or Sean John, but we'll be honest and say that we haven't spotted the Roots logo around town very frequently.
