The Scene
Five Points' name is an homage to the infamous band of 19th-century street criminals whose headquarters were nearby, but there's nothing even vaguely derelict about this atmosphere. Outdoorsy elements make for one of the most tranquil settings around--in the center of the dining room, water trickles from a tree trunk, while light pours down through a skylight in back.
The Food
A wood-burning oven figures prominently into the hearty New American cuisine. The dinner menu changes daily, but dishes like duck breast with pickled Bing cherries, grilled lamb with yellow wax beans and tagliarini with squash blossoms and pesto are typical. The Sunday-only brunch is one of the best around, with first-rate wood-oven baked eggs rancheros and a beer-battered fried fish sandwich on brioche.

Excellent brunch, up there for me as some of the best in downtown manhattan central east or DMCE (pronounced Dumb-Key) Just you wait the realtors will be using that within days! This is my old hood and Five points, Paprika, Great Jones Cafe, Mogador etc were all on the rotation - although westerly sojourns to Cowgirl, or Agave for brunch would not be discouraged. FP's is very solid. Churros are delish, as are the marys, the egg scrambles which they roast rather nicely in the oven are fun too. Overall - super solid brunch (on the fence if its worth the wait). Space is pretty cool too.

$100 down the drain for me and my wife last night (without wine). Almost criminal. I hope management has the sense to give our cash to the bus boys working their asses off rather than the lazy waiters and chef who needs some serious re-freshor training back at the summer camp kitchen from where he probably came. Although the cracker bread was good, the apps and entrees were close to inedible. 'tis a crying shame this restaurant should be allowed to remain open. Halibut was cooked to the dryness of brick and smothered in some kind of silly olive broth sitting on way overcooked potatoes. The flank steak seemed to be made of wood. Was that Domino sugar coating the porterhouse pork? How quaint: baby artichokes, but smothered in cheese without any sense balance. Big **ing deal. Save your money, people, and go stand in line at one of the famous Ray imitation pizza places for a far better meal.

Five Points was written up in Urban Daddy as having "$5 Martinis and $2 Oysters Everyday 5-7", so i go with 3 other people to check it out thinking it is a great deal.. my brother and his girlfriend got there before us and sat at the bar and ordered a drink, the bartender was going to charge them full price until i mentioned the $5 deal, and he rolled his eyes and gave us attitude as he poured me my drink. We then sat down at the table for dinner and try to order another drink and the waiter said it was $12!! the promotion is only at the bar! we had to pay full price because we sat down at a table, he also said the oysters served at the bar were "different" then the ones served in the restaraunt (prob from the hudson river). I pleaded with the waiter to try and give us the discount telling him it WASN'T advertised as being only at the bar and was a main reason we chose to go (plus the restaratunt was EMPTY). Why should we have to pay full price if it was advertised differently? The waiter (who was the best part of the experience, really great guy who tried to help us out) tried to talk the bartender into giving us the deal at the table, and the bartender refused! I then go up to the bar to try and order the drink, the bartender insulted me and told me i can't bring the drink to the table and that it is only a bar deal, and tells me to speak to the manager as it was his rule. There are so many restaraunts in NYC that have recession specials and have much better food then this place, do they really have the nerve to be so rude to customers who are willing to spend a lot of money on food that is overpriced and not that great? Did they really need for us to pay the $7 extra for a martini and $1 extra for the oysters just because we sat down to have dinner? My advice is don't advertise a "deal" to draw people in to the restaraunt if you can't follow through with it, and if you meant to say "only at bar" you should still honor what you advertise and not insult and anger customers who are paying good money to eat your food. The only reason we even stayed was because the waiter was so apologetic and gave us a "free" drink (the bartender messed up my boyfriends order). Don't go to this place, there are so many better restaraunts in the area that treat their customers better and aren't as stingy about a couple of dollars.
