What Our Expert Scouts Say

December 13, 2012

Dojo is a Japanese-meets-American-diner eatery in the heart of the NYU campus. Though their Japanese specials are mediocre at best, what really hits the spot at this place is their breakfast specials. Three words: Challah French Toast. Burgers and salads are massive, by the way.

Great Cheap Veggie Food. DOJO is a great deal for the money. It is one of my favorite quick stops by school. Be wary of the weekend crowds (it can get packed)! Easy atmosphere, no frills and food so cheap. Just so so cheap. It also tastes nice, so its not like MCDonald's cheap or whatever.

Best Health Resturant In NYC. I ate places that are better, but most resturaunts are worse..... There is a bar with brewed drinks. There is indoor and outdoor seating. Me and my friends eat here quite often. Veggie and soy burgers are delicious, with the tahini dressing and a side order of avacados. They serve you fast here. On weekends, especially sundays, there can be big lines and crowds with the kids from NYU. I like this place is near the entertaining Washington Square park where I ride my bike. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner specialties are awesome and scrumptious. It can be alittole expensive depending on what you order. The deserts are amazing. I'd take this place over McDonalds and Burger King anyday.

awesome orange salad dressing keeps me coming back. yes, all Japanese places have orange ginger/sesame/soy salad dressing, but NO place has one as good as Dojo's. I would eat there everyday if I was on campus that often. Nothing but love for them.

Fast and healthy lunch. THERE IS something for everyone at this Health Food/Japanese/American style diner in the middle of NYU. Whether you want to eat healthy or entertaining out-of-owners, the selection of sandwiches, burgers, entrees and breakfasts is quite large.

THE FOOD was served super fast which was perfect if you need to get back to the office or class. I had their version of the turkey club served on healthy grain roll that included cucumber and some type of sprouts. The miso soup is very good. All the vegetables are fresh and colorful. If you are not a vegetarian, as I am, you might need to season your food to your palate.

THE SPACE is divided into two sections. The bar has enough seating for about a dozen patrons. The dining room is walled on two sides of windows and has a low-key vibe. The staff was helpful and nice.

CASH ONLY!!

One of my regular places. I started going to the one on E. 8th st because it was so close to my apartment. When they shut it down for health code problems (which, though i miss the close proximity, I don't blame them if it really was that bad) I started going to the one on W. 4th. I've been going here for 3 years and I love it. I'm a vegetarian and the food is always great. I always started with the French onion soup and then the Vegetable Don. Both are great. My fiancee has gotten the Veggie Burger every time and says it's her favorite and the best she's ever had (and we've tried many places since). The service can be spotty but the place is so cheap and the food is so good that I will keep going back. I recommend this place to everyone who wants a healthy, cheap meal.

OMFG - they serve TAR TaeM! (read the headline right to left, just reversed the word spelling). No kidding, try ordering the "wings" appetizer, it has hair. Me and my GF almost threw up. This was our third and last visit, the food was always subpar but never out and out disgusting and it was a cheap place to eat and have a beer. This time was different - I know tar meat when I see it, don't believe me? Go see for yourself, I am getting sick just thinking about it. BTW - they won't let me write "tar" the normal way so I have to reverse it.

Love my Hometown!. After a HORRIBLE dinning experience in the 'South' with my family. I was just glad to get back home. My comfort zone here. They LIE like bandits down there. Horrible Food!!! But I can always find what I want here. Total comfort.

Two words: TAHINI DRESSING. I don't know what exactly is in the tahini dressing.. but it's freaking awesome. This place is great for a quick bite without hurting your wallet -- just don't forget cash. The food has always been tasty, but service is sometimes less than perfect. If you're in the neighborhood, definitely worth a try.

DISGUSTING!. This place has terrible food and I have been vegetarian for nearly 16 years. I believe it has also been closed down many times for health violations (?) - the salad I ordered had dirt on it. I have never eaten at a place that felt so dirty in my life (and I have also travelled to many third world countries). I would not return unless this was the last place to eat on earth!
