Editorial Review for Madame X – by Leah Hochbaum
The Scene
Red light bulbs and lampshades cast a crimson glow upon a bordello-like bar bedecked with burgundy velvet-draped couches and a slew of nude prints. A curtain blanketing the back wall gives patrons the impression that a show is perennially on the cusp of happening, but the pulse of jazz, dancehall, hip-hop and reggae never lets up, precluding the possibility of anything but a liquor-lapping good time.
The Draw
A 20-something crowd partakes of gleefully named drinks such as the Sweet Little Bitch--a mix of amaretto, Grand Marnier and pineapple juice--at informal pre-parties before heading up to one of the bar's popular adjoined party rooms. The Salon Rouge boasts two fireplaces and an out-of-the-way balcony for intimate gatherings, while the Bedouin Lounge is a racy space with animal-print furnishings in a glass-enclosed atrium overlooking the back garden.

So my girls and I went to Madame X on a Thursday after work and LOVED the atmosphere, the DJ was hella cool taking requests and playing all the latest and greatest!! The drinks were pricey but good. From that experience I decided to have an after dinner get together at Madame X tonight, BIG mistake!!! From the outside my friends and I could tell that the place looked like it had far surpassed capacity, but since we'd luckily found parking for two cars we decided to venture in. After STRUGGLING through the THRONGS of people we found a small, very small corner to chill in, or so we thought, until a security guard came over and asked us to "keep the area clear". ARE YOU SERIOUS??!!! The entire first floor was a FIRE HAZARD yet we were asked to keep an area clear! Talk about laughable! The amount of people dancing and bumping into us as we TRIED to enjoy the small spot we did have was ridiculous. I would not recommend this place to anyone on the weekends. Maybe if you are in the area during the week....but after tonight I don't even know about that! Good luck.
Pros: Decent music and drinks
Cons: TOO MANY PEOPLE!!!!! Too much pushing and shoving, not to mention the bathroom, the men's bathroom is right off of the "dance floor" so if there's an accident you will smell EVERYTHING

My boyfriend and I held our joint birthday party at Madame X and had a great experience. We started planning very late (only a little over a week in advance), but Madame X was very accommodating. Amy, the owner (I think), is the person I made the reservation through and she knew exactly what to do, but was also very relaxed. We wanted a space for about 15 people. It was nice because we didn't have to provide names for a "list" at the door. Our friends just had to tell the door person what party they were there for and then were shown where to go. The price for reserving was very reasonable - I don't know if it's the same regardless of party size, but for us it was only $50 to have the space so long as at least one of us was there before 10pm (after 10 it went up to $100). Amy also promised us that we could have the space as long as we wanted and that we wouldn't be kicked out - which was fantastic. I think that is exceptionally reasonable! Plus, the cover was waived for anyone in my party who arrived by 11. After 11 I think the cover was all of $5 (still, very reasonable!). Also, I liked that we didn't have to get bottle service b/c some of my friends drink a lot and others don't, so it saved the argument of who should chip in what by not being required to get a bottle. About 20 people came and there was still plenty of room. We were upstairs towards the back, on some couches just before the atrium. I thought there would be waitress service, but there wasn't. But, that was fine b/c the bar was about 1 step away from our seats and there was NEVER a wait. I wasn't sure about the music at first (a little TOO old school?), but after a bit it was fantastic and everyone in my party loved the DJ, which is difficult with my very diverse group of friends. The drinks were great and reasonably priced - specialty drinks were only $8 or $9. I particularly liked the Cherry Pop. All in all my friends and I had a great time and I would def book here again!
Pros: Ambience, Price
