The Scene
The toast of many a guidebook, this Soho spot finds its unassuming storefront thronged with tourists and patient locals every evening. Inside, it's decorated fairly traditionally in bare pine, with hand-drawn signs advertising specials du jour. A good deal of the restaurant's enduring popularity is due to the casual, friendly service and mood.
The Food
The restaurant subscribes to the "big fish" doctrine of outsized, crowd-wowing hunks of sashimi. At restaurants serving poor fish, this trend is very tedious indeed; but here, fortunately, everything is fresh and flavorful. Slabs of yellowtail belly melt on the tongue, and a hand roll of chopped toro and scallion is richly complex. Dishes from the kitchen, such as strips of buttery squid in uni sauce, or creamy, gamy monkfish liver, excel as well.

There's a reason why there is ALWAYS a line outside this place, sushi is always fresh and tasty! I usually get there early so the wait is not so long. I've never had a problem with service but again, I time my visits so it's right before the dinner rush.

People spoke of Tomoe as the Volkswagen of restaurants - priced for the masses but with the same German engineering as the luxury brands. Well, we stood forty minutes in line to find out and we were not impressed. The sushi pieces were huge - so big you could not eat them in one bite. The fish is fresh, but as people who love sushi know, fresh is by far not the only thing fish should be. At Tomoe, every piece was just like every other piece. You could not tell you were eating different fish. The prices were very high - no lower than at some of the top places in NY. Overall, I thought this was a waste of time and money. Tomoe is better than your corner sushi place, but it cannot stand up to the competition in this great city.

This is by far my favorite sushi place ever!!!! I am not a food expert by any means, but I have eaten in many different sushi restaurants, and all I have to say is that this restaurant has the freshest fish I have ever tried. If you eat here, you have to come here for the sushi or sashimi, the rolls have extra ingredient that take away from the amazing taste of the fish. The toro (tuna) melts in your mouth. You will probably have to wait before getting into the restaurant, but trust me, the wait is well worth it!

Know Before You Go:
Due to the restaurant's no-reservations policy, there are often hour-long lines to get in. Regulars know to get on line a bit before opening time to get a table more quickly.
