The Setting
A pleasing stop for wine, crepes and a cigarette break, Shade remains remarkably subdued despite its corner location off Washington Square Park. The black vinyl loveseats against the wall may not exactly be comfy, but the unfinished brick walls, low light and French conversation in the background enhance the intimacy of the place.
The Menu
The bar offers a fine selection of crisp white wines and hearty reds, with soups, salads and sweet or savory crepes (containing your choice of three fillings).

Next to the Shade bar at 241 Sullivan St. is Shade to Go, a take-out window for delicious crepes, both entrees ($7,75) and desserts ($6,75). You can choose classic or organic whole grain crepes, and combine any three items. Entree crepes choices include smoked salmon, French brie, goat cheese, ham, smoked turkey, spinach, roasted garlic, eggs, roasted zuccini. Dessert crepes choices include apple compot, strawberry, nuttela, rum, peach, dulce de leche, almonds, walnuts, pineapple raisines, whipped cream, and various sauces and syrups. They have yummy hot grilled sandwiches and breakfast specials. There are usually several people at the window, happily waiting for their orders,. Good neighborhood place. If it's nice weather, you can sit in the NYU park around the corner.

I like the atmosphere, music, and at first the bartender was really nice. But, apparently in Eastern Europe (where he was from) they don't understand the concept of the customer is always right. My boyfriend ordered a Spaten on tap, it was really flat. He told the bartender and the guy tasted it for himself, then checked the keg and said "this is how Spaten tastes" and so besides not just giving him anothr beer, he was out to prove him wrong. Then I got a Stella and it was actually worse. It was the flattest beer ever and they both cost us $6.00, which is a lot for beer. Bad customer service!!
