“The beers are way less expensive than most other bars.”
Friendly atmosphere, a fierce sound system and music to soothe savages..
The Scene
Tucked away on quaint-yet-trendy MacDougal Street, Sullivan Hall is a cozy haven for laid-back college kids and hippie-by-night businessmen with wrinkles darting their freshly un-tucked shirttails. Stencils cut the beams of spotlights to cast softly glowing murals on the darkened walls, and the club's elongated space gives the crowd room to move between the chatty atmosphere around the bar and the quiet surrounding the stage.
The Draw
With a killer sound system and an eclectic roster that specializes in jam bands, Sullivan Hall is paradise for amateur live recordings--just ask the tie-dyed, pony-tailed guy, toting a 10-foot contraption with a tangle of microphones at its peak. The intimate setting cuts crowd noise, and makes it a great place to catch up-and-coming bands with big hometown followings before they move on to bigger clubs.
Variety of music and a chill feel. This venue really does have great music. Variety. Many talented bands. The beers are way less expensive than most other bars. It's not pretensious and feels cozy inside. This place has been going for years and has had some great musicians on that stage. I hear they're redoing the bar next month. Should look way cleaner and put together come Aug.
Den of Thieves. First off, don't get me wrong, this place hosts some good up and coming bands. However, it also has some of the most immoral bartenders I've ever come across in NYC (give them a $20 for a beer and they give you back a $5, claiming you gave them a $10 - small things like that that are just not cool and apparently happen all too often there). This post is meant to be a warning to anyone thinking of going there to be careful with the staff so you don't get ripped off like I did. I will not be going back.
Very grrr baby!. I come here pretty often to see Twin-A. I really like this venue because you can get really close to the musicians and the cover is usually $10 or less to see about 4 bands. The drinks are decently priced but if you are sitting at the tables there is a drink minimum. The Lion's Den gets crowded pretty fast so be sure to get there early... who knows, maybe you'll discover a great new band!
The Matt Sandy Band are awesome!.
This is a great space for live music. Great sound system. Went to the Matt Sandy Band with their wonderful original songs, dynamic front man and mindblowing back up singer.
It's a space that you must visit for live music.
