Editorial Review for Depression Modern – by Melissa Kirsch

The Goods
Depression Modern is one of the few restorers of antiques from the 1930s and '40s left in the city. But with a selection as wide and top-notch as theirs, how could anyone compete? Add the fact that owner Michael Smith's got his own exclusive battery of lacquerers and upholsterers, and it's no wonder that the quality of these leather sofas, mahogany armoires and Bauhaus-era chrome daybeds is unsurpassed.

The Scene
The only thing depressing about Depression Modern is the fact that no one could possibly own all the gorgeous antiques on display. A black and white checked lino floor and lots of mirrors make the small space classy and inviting and the staff is boisterous and impeccably educated on the store's inventory. On weekends, the downstairs warehouse is open, featuring all the week's newest arrivals. Get there early: the store's devoted regulars snatch up the new stuff almost as soon as it's in stock.

The owner of this shop takes meticulous personal care in the restoration of furniture from the 1940s and 1950s. Restoration work is outstanding. The wood finishes are gleaming and the integrity of the originals is given the utmost attention. The owner personally delivers many purchases. Shop is always filled as well with knickknacks from the period. As a frequent customer, I recommend the high quality of work and reasonable prices at this exceptional store.

Depression Modern sells beautifully restored 1930s and some 1940s furniture at excellent prices. A number of celebrities, including Whoopi Goldberg, have waited dutifully on line on Saturday mornings for the noon opening with a new lot of furniture. Bring coffee, a bagel, and your checkbook (or cash), and hang out from at least 11am in front of the store. The vast majority of the furniture sells within the first 10 minutes after the noon opening. Swing by during the week to see what you could have bought! The owner, Michael, provdies excellent service and delivers the furniture free of charge later that week. This is a terrific store with one-of-a-kind vintage furniture. A must see.
