The Scene – You may not recognize him with his clothes on but, yes, that probably is Harvey Keitel at the next table. Bubby's offers just the kind of clean, healthful cooking that should appeal to the method actor looking to shed a few pounds before his next skinflick. A snack canteen for nearby Miramax-ers during the week, it's overrun by uptowners at weekend brunchtime. – – The Food – The cuisine has the same kind of stylish, determinedly casual feel as the decor. You can stick to the tasty sandwiches or order up more substantial fare (some think the pies alone make…

ambiance
100.0% positive
  1. Yes, the decor is adorable- you will feel like you stopped at a charming bed and breakfast while driving through the countryside.
  2. Happy farmhouse decor, complete with groups of out-of-towner girls who think everything is one big S&theCity episode.
  3. Bubby's is best at lunch and brunch, and the bright open space provides the perfect ambiance for a relaxing meal!
  4. Both the atmosphere and the eats are consistent, cozy, comfortable.
  5. Usual wait on weekends is about 45 minutes as its very popular with local twentysomethings, celebrity sightings are common, relaxed atmosphere, child friendly as well.
  6. Sometimes you go to a friend's country place and they seem to have everything -- atmosphere, the right food, good portions.
dessert
85.0% positive
  1. The sour cream pancakes were out of this world and I would highly recommend the cheese grits as a side.
  2. Hands down the best pie we ever had.
  3. Bubby's consistently turns out good food: the breakfast is excellent with lots of great choices; their pies are the best in the city, maybe in the country; they make their own ice cream (the buttermilk ice cream is delicious).
  4. the desserts are pretty good.
  5. Food was mediocre, bloody mary was below-average, pie was great.
  6. The tables outside wobbled, the biscuit (I think thats what it was, either that or left over over-baked pie dough) was inedible.
  7. ps: the pie is still good though
  8. Not that you want dessert to wrap up a syrup topped bacon filled start to a day, but the pies and cakes are delish!
  9. If your focus has changed from people who liked your bbq and pie that have kids to mothers and crayon toteing 3 yrs.
  10. wouldn't return -- they do have good pie, but only when haven't run out.
drinks
60.0% positive
  1. There are great drinks and baked goods all under one roof!
  2. We had horrible service and had to prompt the waitress for everything from drinks, to bread to our check.
  3. Food is good, staff is friendly but speed of service is too painful except for drink cocktails at the bar.
  4. The bad coffee was a harbinger of things to come.
  5. wouldn't say Bubby's will blow you out of the water, but they provide a solid bunch served with good coffee.
food quality

  1. loooooved it, amazing food, can have a light or heavy breakfast with the huge selection on the gigantic menu.
  2. For lunch, the Garlic burger with brie cheese is a good bet.
  3. My husband and I were placed in the farthest corner of the restaurant, practically INSIDE the little side room for the dirty dishes, squeezed between a constantly swinging door and a wall.
  4. Are now ridiculously overpriced post-coital eggs.
  5. The menu is great and is the only place that I have eaten where the food is as good as I can cook at home.
  6. The food is great.
  7. Mac & cheese is nothing to write home about; the beet salad is boring, mostly lettuce; tuna sandwhich - boring, mostly mayo; the french fries looked re-fried and were cold; the "excellent" pork sandwich came on one of those supermarket hot-dog buns.
  8. Eggs were over done, toast was cold.
  9. Everytime I go there I have great food, fast service and an A-List celebrity sighting.
  10. The food is way overpriced and those two biscuits they bring out before breakfast were harder than rocks.

  22. The service was fine, but if you're actually looking for good food, stay away.
  23. The food was good, not great, but pretty good.
  24. The service was disjointed, the food was sub-par (I agree with previous reviewer's comment on the biscuits), and the prices were ridiculous ($78 for three to eat breakfast!)
  25. Great food, excellent breakfast and comfort food if you are staying in the tribeca/soho area.
  26. If your focus has changed from people who liked your bbq and pie that have kids to mothers and crayon toteing 3 yrs.

  42. have to say the food was pretty good, and the "Fair Trade Coffee" as well.
  43. It wasnt a total wash you still have the best potato chips in town.
  44. The food is way overpriced and just not that good(apart from the amazing matzoh ball soup).

Never Again!!

by unit8246 at Citysearch

I ate their on a trip to NYC. I, later, read an article on who the head chef was. Curtis Brown use to be a singer of one of the craziest rock bands out (not a good crazy). I saw him once play with his self and then wipe a guys head in the front row, then poured a beer on his head! He followed this up by trying to start a fight with everyone in the front row. He also cooked at this joint in Los Angeles and smoked weed in the back and was very rude to customers. I am disgusted that I ate food that his hands touched! And, by the way, it was way over priced for the type of food it is.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR HARD-EARNED MONEY!!

by mimimaloo2 at Citysearch

How can a restaurant name Bubby's (Jewish term for grandmother) have it's menu literally packed with bacon and pork products?? Poor Bubby is spinning in her grave. Even the over-rated freeking biscuits have bacon fat in them, for christ's sake!

It looks as if they got a chef or management that thought, wow, lets make the menu southern comfort food... and then got a cook who is from Jersey to cook it. My friend this stuff is simply awful! My husband had the meatloaf with collard greens. He said the food was so greasy he could not eat it. I ordered fried chicken, green beans and mac/cheese (only veggies that did not contain bacon or pork fat.). If you guys wanna go southern, then at least learn to make the dishes. This was AWFUL! No one is the south puts bacon or pork fat in their dishes any more; it just ain't healthy to do anymore. The chicken was favourless and a greasy mess. No herbs, no spice... just greasy crunch... and EXTREMELY salty. They brag about brining (really called Koshering) the chicken; guess they don't do a second soaking in water, as you should before preparing to remove excess salt.

The atmosphere is so loud we could not have a conversation without shouting across the table. The beer was warm, so was the water they brought on a 95 degree day. When I asked for ice, they offered to get me a iced lemonade at 5 bucks (!!) a glass.

I know they have a captive audience down there in Tribeca. But I gotta tell you this place sucks so badly, I'd walk blocks in the 95 degree heat (or freezing cold) to find something else.

SMART restaurateurs, heed this and put up a good family restaurant in this area. You'll make a mint and Bubby's will be gone in a flash. No competition is their only edge... it sure isn't the food.

A New York Institution

by NYC4ME at Citysearch

I have been brunching a Bubby's since it opened in 90'. The food is great. Both the atmosphere and the eats are consistent, cozy, comfortable. Brunch has become a bit of a scene and it can get a little crazy sometimes. There is always a line-up and tons of tourists and New York transplants. If you can stand being trampled at the bar by a loud family of six from Kansas - or getting bumped for Natalie Portman and friend - after you waited an hour for a table, then you're in for a treat. Once you are (finally) seated, you will be treated to attentive service and some of the best brunch selections in the city.

  • Cons: The crowds ::yuck::

It's Over For Me--No More Chances

by tadevosy at Citysearch

Over the years, I have developed a typical abused spouse syndrome towards this wretched brunch place. Every time I go there and get mistreated, I leave angry, swearing never to go back. Two weeks later, I hopelessly trudge back there for another take, and again, I storm out fuming and swearing it was the last time. Well, this time I have really, really had it. No more for me. I do not even know where to begin. The worst service you can imagine magnified by ten. Last time I went there on a Saturday morning, when the place was nearly empty. My husband and I were placed in the farthest corner of the restaurant, practically INSIDE the little side room for the dirty dishes, squeezed between a constantly swinging door and a wall. 35 weeks pregnant and rather huge, I asked the host if we could have a different, more comfortable table. His response? Well you know, we try to distribute the tables more evenly. The cups are habitually dirty. Getting bottled water is an impossible task. If you lose your knife, you better learn to cut with your teeth, because you ain't getting a new one. The home-fried potatoes are so overfried and burned, I think they recycle the ones from three weeks ago. My last dish there had two thick hairs on the bottom. The waitress didn't even offer to have it replaced. The bathrooms are a health violation. Yes, they occasionally have spectacular reuben sandwiches and good bacon, but really, really, I have HAD it.

  • Pros: Good bacon
  • Cons: Everything else

Great Brunch Spot!!

by amynewyork at Citysearch

I had been wanting to go to Bubby's for brunch for some time and am so glad I finally made it! The place was packed but our group of 6 was seated within 15 minutes. The food was delicious and the portions were huge! The mimosa had fresh squeezed orange juice and the bloody mary was spicy and seasoned perfectly. The sour cream pancakes were out of this world and I would highly recommend the cheese grits as a side. Will definitely be back again soon!

  • Pros: great food and great atmosphere
  • Cons: none! great spot!
