Still, customers line up here for a reason: Joe's cuisine is consistently top-notch and otherwise authentic Shanghainese. Prices compare to the bigger restaurants in Chinatown, and the wall of critics' praises grows larger every year. – – The Food – It's difficult to find anything that isn't outstanding. Drool over the succulent pork shoulder, braised tender and sweet in a smoky, malted sauce…

  2. The soupy dumplings are so good and authentic.
  3. The other food the restaurant serves is also good - no fast food Chinese here.
  4. Also, I wouldn't order typical Cantonese style dishes here.
  5. This place is great, everyone comes here for the soup dumplings- but rule of thumb, get the one with crab meat, it tastes so much better,

  7. At least the soup dumplings are delicious.
  8. The other food besides the dumplings was inedible, worse then your average Chinatown food.
  9. Joe's also likes to pour goopy sauces on all of their dishes so if you are watching either your fat or sodium intake, ask for it on the side.
  10. Other great dishes here include: lion's head meatballs (be warned, they are HUGE and are intended to be shared), soft tofu & crabmeat sauce, braised pork shoulder, razor clams (or squid) in black bean sauce with jalapenos, and (if it's in season) baby pea
  11. (note: the soup dumplings at Ollie's are expensive, dry, and pitiful shriviled up liitle things, never go there!)
  12. LOVE the spicy buffalo carp fish belly.

Empty Place and Still Won't Seat You

by BusyLittleBee at Citysearch

I've been here many times, not my choice of course. The food is mediocre (I have had better Shanghai food). The wait is almost always long and every time I go I have to share tables, which I hate. What makes it even worse is that a few weeks ago my family decided to go there for lunch because it was closer than the other shanghai places we usually go to. The place was empty and we were only missing one person for our party. The waiter refused to seat us, even after we told him that the person was just around the corner. I don't plan on ever going back.

Heavenly dumplings...BUT

by jmbuz at Citysearch

Their dumplings are truly heavenly (I'd recommend always order the one with crab, don't waste money on the cheaper pork only version). But apart from that, the service is not great, the seating is uncomfortable and be prepared to share a table with some strangers. The waiting time could be annoyingly long. And let' just say it's not a complete surprise to me that the restaurant recently got a B rating from the NYC Health Dept. So you decide.

Nice Soup Dumpling, Terrible Waiting Time

by JAY S at Citysearch

Good: very nice soup dumpling. Hey, if you are here, make sure you order the Soup Dumpling, that's their signature food.

Bad: No credit card, No reservation. Long waiting time. OK, I understand to enjoy good food, you might need to wait in line. but this place's waiting time is ridiculous. and waiter's attitude is always like "I've told you, at least 40 minutes!"...

Tips: Hey, they put 15% tips automatically in the bill. dont overlook it.
