“this place is fun and i cannot go often enough (lord knows i've tried).”
“Any of teh steamed buns are great to start pork or crab, both fantastic, I would order both!”
“The waiter gave us about 5 mins to look over the extensive menu and kept rushing us to order by pacing back and fourth.”
“All around a great chinese restaurant, but do not miss out on the soup buns!”
“will never go back there to this establishment due to classless people working there and no food is good enough to be treated like trash.”
“The service is amazing -- they were constantly coming back to make sure we had everything we needed.”
“Wonderful value.”
“Its all about the soup dumplings here and as many folks will testify that waiting 45 minutes - 1 hour to be seated at a table full of strangers and to endure terrible service may very well be worth it.”
Though best known for its siu lim bao, or soup dumplings, Joe's is one of New York's best introductions to the cuisine of Shanghai, one of China's noblest cookeries.
magic dumplings!. the soup dumplings are as amazing as everyone says. this place deserves all the hype it gets! stick with the dumplings and scallion pancakes, they are a great deal and the food is over priced and mediocre at best.
Empty Place and Still Won't Seat You. I've been here many times, not my choice of course. The food is mediocre (I have had better Shanghai food). The wait is almost always long and every time I go I have to share tables, which I hate. What makes it even worse is that a few weeks ago my family decided to go there for lunch because it was closer than the other shanghai places we usually go to. The place was empty and we were only missing one person for our party. The waiter refused to seat us, even after we told him that the person was just around the corner. I don't plan on ever going back.
Heavenly dumplings...BUT. Their dumplings are truly heavenly (I'd recommend always order the one with crab, don't waste money on the cheaper pork only version). But apart from that, the service is not great, the seating is uncomfortable and be prepared to share a table with some strangers. The waiting time could be annoyingly long. And let' just say it's not a complete surprise to me that the restaurant recently got a B rating from the NYC Health Dept. So you decide.
Nice Soup Dumpling, Terrible Waiting Time.
Good: very nice soup dumpling. Hey, if you are here, make sure you order the Soup Dumpling, that's their signature food.
Bad: No credit card, No reservation. Long waiting time. OK, I understand to enjoy good food, you might need to wait in line. but this place's waiting time is ridiculous. and waiter's attitude is always like "I've told you, at least 40 minutes!"...
Tips: Hey, they put 15% tips automatically in the bill. dont overlook it.
Soup & Dumplings. This place was awesome! Great soup, great dumplings and no complaints. If your in the area definitely stop in and make it your business to have the dumplings
This place is awsome!.
Really good dumplings and kung pao!
Authentic chinese in the heart of china town.
I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THE FOOD....
But these guys can get you whatever you're looking for...
Just ask for Jean Lin and you can get brand name electronics for a fraction of the price!! They have knock-offs of many great brand names!
Worst service. Me and my family were on vacation in new york and decided to stop by joes shanghai for the dumplings since that's what they're known for. We had 6 adults and a baby, they made us wait outside for 10 minutes to get a table, then when we got a table, the server was absolutely the worst and unpolite. He kept asking me what I wanted to eat and I told him we already placed the order. He was not happy with us only wanting to sample the dumplings. He wanted us to order dishes but we had already had dim sum at pings seafood. I will never go back there to this establishment due to classless people working there and no food is good enough to be treated like trash. I would not recommend this establishment to anyone.
Mmmmmmmmmmmm dumplingssssssss.
I have been coming to Joes for years now. Since the 1997 issue of best of New York, in New York magazine to be exact. I guess it's safe to say I'm a regular.
I frequent the Flushing location but have been to them all. Pell street is not my favorite. I feel that this location is dirtier, and more hectic than Flushing; BUT and there's a big but. The food at either of the two locations is fantastic!
Any of teh steamed buns are great to start pork or crab, both fantastic, I would order both!
Scallion pancakes are greasy delights!
Wonton soup with chives and shrimp dumplings, add some of teh sauce from the steamed buns (adds a nice flavor).
next the minced pork noodle ( noodles wiht a spicy minced pork sauce) and/ or the shanghai fried flat noodle (the can make this with seafood too, although I am a fan of the pork version).
look out for a special off the menu, teh general taos (with white meat, make sure you specify that), dried sauted shreded beef (spicy beeff with shredded carrots, scallions, and celery all ), or the jumbo crispy prawns shell off (shelled prawns in a spicy meat sauce) are all favs.
Also must have is the shrimp fried rice, the put tons of huge shrimp in there, not those wimpy lil guys or chopped shrimp! Man,, i'm getting hungry.. at this time the only place i can go now is Wo Hop... dont get me started there for some real old school fast food style chinese 24 hours!!!
SICKKK
POOR and rushed service, ok food, OVERRATED. Came here a month ago for Chinese New Year with my sister's friends who were raving about the little pork dumplings aka shao long boa so I tagged along to see if they really were the best. It was relatively empty considering it was still early (5-6 pm) and the dinner rush didn't start yet. The waiter gave us about 5 mins to look over the extensive menu and kept rushing us to order by pacing back and fourth. It took a while for the food to come and when it did, they got one of my orders WRONG and instead of taking it back, they said "this is what you ordered". OK FINE I didn't make a big deal out of it....until they slapped the check on our table BEFORE we finished eating. Then the waiter came back 5 mins later and asked us if we were ready to pay. I didn't appreciate being rushed out of there before I finished my meal...it wasn't even busy and no one was waiting on a table so I don't know why the waiter rushed us out of there. I noticed that they let the caucasian tourists extend their stay and were just rude to asian customers. That being said, they're lucky I even left a tip...$4 t be exact (an unlucky number and gesture according to the Chinese) especially on Chinese New Year. NEVER going back
