  1. Don't let the stark decor and slightly surly service turn you away - this place is a total gem.

  1. This is a great place for the budget conscious and fans of no-frills food from the subcontinent.
  2. It wasn't bad food, it was actually tasty, thought no warm.
  3. You would think they could at least keep the food warm.
  4. The chicken tandoori is good, too, but I'm always a tad suspicious of meat at these low, low prices.
  5. As an appetizer, I recommend the lamb sausage or the naan bread.

Heavy food

by goliathslw at Citysearch

I tried this place after reading it one of these magazines- New York Mag or Time Out. It was an article on a date under $50. I guess I shouldn't have expected much just from that. This place offers the care minimum. It's pre-made food with made to order bread. It wasn't bad food, it was actually tasty, thought no warm. You would think they could at least keep the food warm. I just didn't feel very good after eating my meal, and I didn't even finish all of it. When you go, its like 6 choices- meat with veggies, veggies with veggies, etc. I got the one of the chicken with 2 sides (mixed vegetables and cauliflower_. The chicken was overcooked, but I am very particular about overcooked chicken. The food just wasn't anything to write home about, but the nan was a different story. It was so good, I would make a trip to this place just for the nan. This place probably is prettyg ood for take out- its cheap ($7 or less for a meal), but dont' make plans to sit. I went during lunch and it was packed. The space is small, and there's very little seating, so beware.

  • Pros: nan
  • Cons: cramped, heavy food

Delicious, aromatic curry

by ignatiusjreilly at Citysearch

This is a great place for the budget conscious and fans of no-frills food from the subcontinent. Don't let the stark decor and slightly surly service turn you away - this place is a total gem.

As an appetizer, I recommend the lamb sausage or the naan bread. The naan is made on-demand, fresh from the brick oven.

For the main, I usually have the three vegetable combo - it's an appealing $4.50, and is perfectly aromatic and quite filling. The chicken tandoori is good, too, but I'm always a tad suspicious of meat at these low, low prices.

  • Pros: Cheap, great food
  • Cons: Horrible decor

Antidote to NYC's generic IndoPak poison

by herodotus at Citysearch

This place rules. Owner Shakeel "Shak Diesel" Kazmi slings daal like your momses does- that is, if she learned how to cook while kicking it in Karachi. The vegetables outplay the meats- nothing can stop the three-dish Vegetable Combo from putting up a triple-double. And at $4.50, the Combo will never create salary cap concerns.

Don't forget to pick up some seductive ras malai before you leave.

The House maintains a minimalist decor, but who cares? Go for the food, not the environ. If you need ambience, go pay more for far lesser quality food at Baluchis.

  • Pros: Real Deal Pakistani, Bargain Prices
  • Cons: crowded at peak hours
