Grasp the sparrow's tail ... if you know what that means the you will want to eat here.... This may be the only dim sum available ( to round eyes) in NYC... yeah it is that good. Not a place for yuppies, but if you really like dim sum or want to learn about it, well than this is your spot.
you get what you pay for.... Went for saturday morning Dim Sum. Food okay but nothing to write home about. Mens restroom- disgusting w. no paper towels! There are much better, cleaner places to get Dim Sum in Chinatown.
wash the floors of the stairs please. I do love some of the dim sum but if you are looking for a special experience, this is not the place. The rest rooms are downstairs and are just about barely acceptable. No paper towels and the hand dryer did not work. The steps down to the rest rooms were so sticky, the sole of my shoe stuck to each step, making that sticky snap sound on each and every step. I know that Chinatown has different charms than other neighborhoods, but all of the empty tables in the restaurant on a Sunday afternoon tell me the current managers better pick up their game.
good dim sum (if they don't run out).
we usually go to dim sum go go for dim sum, but we decided to spice up our routine with a visit here on saturday. im told that its usually pretty packed on weekends, but im guessing that due to the combination of horrible weather, labor day weekend, and our early visit time (12pm), we were offered a table right away.
like most of the dim sum restaurants in chinatown (w/the exception of go go), the dim sum is pushed around in carts by harried middle-aged women. i prefer the dim sum sheets at go go since you can check off what you like and ensure that you get to eat everything you set up for. i suppose some people like the surprise and the experience of picking and choosing what you want to eat from the carts.
we ended up having to wait a long time for the items that we wanted to finally be available and having to refuse the offerings of various intestines and of foods that we had already eaten. im sure that some of the other people in the restaurant were waiting for the exact same foods as us, because some things sold out before the cart could get to us.
the quality of the dim sum is pretty good, and the variety is ok as well. too bad they dont make more of the popular dishes.
Carts roll fast and furious at this bustling dim sum standby..
The Scene
There's a certain locomotive element here as all the dim sum carts go whizzing by. Small parties must share a table with others (it's not negotiable), and the freshest foods circulate before 3pm.
The Food
HSF offers all the dim sum favorites, such as pork buns, shumai dumplings and sweet egg custard pastries, as well as fried turnip cakes, shrimp balls and freshly braised vegetables. The steamed offerings are fresh and filling--try the shrimp rice noodles. The fried dishes, such as egg rolls and garlic pork dumplings, can be a bit too greasy. Dim sum is served here until 4pm, Monday through Friday, but menu items, including some unorthodox choices such as open skillet-cooked scallops, chive-infused dumpling varieties and dense, rich coconut pudding cubes, are also available. Or you can pick a live lobster from the tanks and have it cooked within minutes.
This place has gotten worse & worse!. Had a very dissapointing meal at HSF today. Food was not fresh and service was poor. They didn't clean the table before we sat and there were stains on the table cloth and on the plates and utensils. Service was worse than ever. I won't be going back to this place and would not recommend it to my friends.
Unimpressed. Cannot understand the rave reviews for this restaurant. On a Sunday morning the same 5 or 6 dim sum choices kept coming around over & over again. Service was fair. Food was below average - bland and uninteresting. But one of the cheapest around.
seafood galore. went with good pittsburgh friends & had a feast. seafood selection is good with fresh displays to choose from. spiny crab was great choice. but must go in large group to experience the diverse dishes otherwise can't fully appreciate the cuisine. it is a little pricy but it's a seafood restaurant. no more chinatown prices! SUM IT: tasty choices. must try at least once, early week evenings best time to go.
Great Dim Sum!. Went here with my parents and it was fabulous! Although If you sit in the way back it is tougher to have a comfortable meal as you are always getting up and down....
Good Chinese. Service was very good (and the tablecloths were sparkling clean!). Ordered 3 dishes and all were excellent. Was recommended in the Michelin Green Guide and it didn't disappoint. Hint: most of the diners were Chinese.
