  2. La Mela is great for people watching and it's a great place to have fun with friends, family, or a significant other.
  3. The best food on the planet, wiht enormous portions and a fun atmosphere
  4. the decor basically is lawn tables and pictures of customers all over the walls - so it's nothing spectacular, but the service is good and the food is excellent.
  5. The vegetables are wonderful, the wine is fantastic, and the atmosphere is relaxed and casual.
  6. This cozy lil joint on Mulberry really blew my friends and I away with the friendly and attentive help, and the onslaught of flavor and variety with the menuless cuisine.
  7. It's just simply a great, fun, hilarious place to go with tons of friends to yell and laugh and have a good time.
  8. think that despite the lousy atmosphere there is no place I've ever eaten before that compares to their food,it is excellent and the service is right on time.

THE FOOD USED TO BE BETTER...PRICES HAVE GONE UP.

SERVICE IS MEDIOCRE

Boisterous Fun with Good Eats

by Tony_B

Go with a group, eat family style and be prepared for a loud night of fun with very good food at a very reasonable price. We ate here for the first time as a party of 8 on the Saturday evening after Christmas. For $34 pp we had a very good five course meal. Various musicians would wander in off the street to serenade the diners. Some were good, others were not. Some people enjoy this, others find it annoying. For example an asian guy with thick glasses who was obviously mentally challenged came in wearing a santa hat and holding a trumpet on which he could barely play a note. Nevertheless he was cheered and tipped by the patrons. As far as the meal goes, it was great to not have to fuss over a menu and decide what to order that would please 8 people. We just sat down and let them bring us food. The tomatoes and fresh mozzarella were excellent, served with a very good hot anitpasto of stuffed mushrooms, sauteed asparagus, roasted peppers and spedino alla romana. The pasta course was next, which consisted of a huge platter of fabulous gnocchi, tri-color tortellini and rigatoni. Next was the meat course, with roasted chicken, shrimp marinara and veal francaise. The veal was very tender but the shrimp were a bit over done. Finally came dessert, a big plate loaded with an assortment of delicious treats including tiramisu, italian cheesecake, tartufos, cannolis, bananas foster, etc. We had two magnums of wine, a red and a white, each very drinkable and at $28 each, very reasonable. We also ordered coffee, cappuccino and espresso which was extra. Unlike some others have reported, the tip was left up to us. With tax, tip & all it came to $57 per person, which I think is a great deal for all that good food in NYC.

  • Pros: Fun with a group
  • Cons: Too many street musicians

It's Italian

by kat1016p

My friends and I accidently stumbled upon Little Italy randomly on our last night in NYC. It was a friggin street party! We all fell in love.

So we decided to stop into La Mela and have some dinner. The experience was AWESOME! We all sat outside and two of us ordered a glass of wine. Instead of bringing two glasses our waiter brought the bottle and said to enjoy and if we didn't drink it all he wouldn't charge us for it all. Of course we drank it all!

The food was amazing and the wait staff were typical Italians...loud, slightly perverted and a hell of a lot of fun!

I highly recommend this place for a good time if nothing else.

  • Pros: Food, wait staff, good times
  • Cons: none
