I just ate here for the first time w/ the wife and I have a pretty well rounded experience with vietnamese and Pho soups. I have to say, I was pretty dissappointed with the whole experience, the thing that really kills this place is the table setup. Its bright, crowded and poorly spaced relevant to the kitchen/staff so any sort of enjoyment you might be able to get out of your dinner other than the food is pretty much out the window. It is LOUD in there as well, table next to us had a screming baby and the table behind us was full of geriatric bald ex-hippies yammering on about lobbyists for the telecommunications industry. SO.. you can imagine I had a pretty quick meal, in and out with no lingering of any sort. We both ordered Pho and they forgot to give us the little basil/beansprouts you usually get, I had to ask. Strike one. They brought out my wife's soup within 5 min of ordering before the appetizers or my soup or anything else. Strike two. My soup came out 15 minutes later, by now i was pretty annoyed. They brought out our appetizer 5 minutes after my soup. Strike three. Ok, thats it, Im pretty frustrated. Food better be good.....it's good..BUT, it's the same Pho I have had at many many other places so...nothing new. The bowls/serving sizes were much smaller than most other Pho places and they charge the same price. The Cha Gio spring rolls were good but nothing great, just normal. Overall, I really think this place probably has some good dishes on there at good prices, but really, its nothing special and I think all this talk of "diamond in the rough" just simply means that other reviewers have not been to many vietnamese places. The food is not worth the sacrfice you make for the ungodly poor atmosphere. I would say the service was bad but I have never ever been to a vietnamese joint with good service. Its pretty much an oxymoron.

Pros: Friendly service compared to other vietnamese places

Cons: atmosphere, setup

Tiny, cheap New Pasteur is one of my favorite Viet Namese restaurants in Manhattan. Their lemon grass squid is perfect, the pho (broth with noodles and meat) is fresh and flavorful, and their traditional condensed milk hot or iced coffee is the best in the city. Lots more vegetarian options, too, than the average Viet Namese restaurant.

Pros: Great food, low prices, prompt service

Cons: Strictly no-frills decor
