What Our Expert Scouts Say

November 11, 2012

The days when Tribeca Grill was the cat's meow, the gathering place of the glitterati, are long gone; but that doesn't mean that Drew Nieporent's flagship isn't a very solid, very comfortable restaurant with a big wine list and first-class service. The food was never the point, but it's pretty goddamned good.

Good food poor service. I had lunch here with my friend. I have to say I was impressed with the food, but the server we got was sub prime. He didn't know the menu nor could explain what was in the specials. He forgot about us several times and it took forever to get the check.

Perfect Valentine's Day Restaurant. My boyfriend took me to Tribeca Grill for Valentine's Day. Everything we both ordered off the pre fixe menu was delicious. For my appetizer, the mozzarella, basil, tomato tart was perfect, and for my main course,I highly suggest the lobster. Every bite I took was mouthwatering. The service was good and our servers were very attentive. The prices are high, but if you can afford it, eat here!

Service is going downhill.... This is my third time to Tribeca Grill and it seems to be going downhill fast. The food and wine was good but the waiting service was the worst. I was there on a business meeting so I can appreciate that the waiter wanted to give us time to discuss business between courses, but 30 minutes with no contact is not acceptable. We were sitting there with no food and empty glasses for most of the meal. We had to flag down another waiter to try to find ours and send them over.

My customers are long-time New Yorkers and they said that if they don't improve service, this place will no survive. There are simply too many good places in NYC to justify going to an establishment where the waiting staff would rather chat in the corner than do their job.

On the upside, the food was quite good. I've seen some review bashing their food and service but as of now, I'm just bashing the service. Bobby D. needs to step in and get this place back on track.

Not what it used to be. The servers were accommodating, friendly & attentive. However, the food selection is tired & the quality is average, especially for the price. Soft shell crab was a special, offered fried. I asked for & received a nicely sautéed version, but the cold hard vegetable side ruined the dish. My partner experienced the same with her filet of beef. While it was the requested temperature, the lackluster flavor & over cooked mashed potatoes & vegetable again disappointed. I enjoy crunchy bread, but theirs was hard. The caviar appetizer was accompanied by greasy potato pancakes & way-too-thick toast points. And the caviar? Frankly, I'm not sure it was the $85 quality it should have been. When a couple pays close to $500 fpr dinner, they have the right to expect more.

Manager's Service. Would have given four stars if not for our bill. Let me explain; Our meals were excellent, the service was standard for such an establishment and we truly enjoyed our evening. So why two stars? My husband was pouring his $12 beer into his glass when a part of his glass broke off into his meal. The glass was big enough that he put it back into his beer and showed it to the bus boy. The manager came over, apologized and took the beer away. A new glass was brought back but no beer. So my husband finished his remaining beer. When our bill came, his beer was on there. $12 for beer he couldn't drink! Come on - who does that?

very surprised at the poor quality. I and some clients dine once or twice a month at this place. Today when the waiter brought the salads there were several dozen insects that came flying out!!! The waiter and the bus boy stood over our table swating the bugs!!! As the meal progressed I wish I had brought a whisle to get the attention of the waiter. They all stood in a group talking and generally ignored us. This is indicative of how an establishment starts going down hill and the owners don't have a clue why the business is going down hill.

Extremely disappionted. My husband and I recently had a long special weeked in Manhattan. Part of it was supposed to be dinner at Tribeca Grill, The poor service started at the door with a hostess who told us to come back closer to our reservation time instead of suggesting a cocktail at the bar, sitting at a dirty bar for 10 minutes ,a full 10 minutes until I finally cleared the dirty dishes away myself, having said hostess forget who we were when we did check back 3 more times ,before finally leaving without dinner, it was a very disappointing experience, When we had checked our e-mail the next day in Times Square, the restaurant had cancelled our reservation as we were sitting at the bar waiting to be sat, Did I mention we're both chef's and fellow restaurant owners? I'd like to say it left a bad taste in my mouth but unfortunately it left no taste in my mouth.

A Huge Disappointment. We recently visited NYC on vacation. I was looking forward to eating here and planned a night just for this. I made reservations and were told dress was casual. When we arrived, few people were there and we got seated in a back area (away from the views of the restuarant), next to the bathroom (which is a hole). We had a view of the kitchen entrance. I was seated right next to a drafty window and it was not comfortable. I was very disappointed at the seating and was wondering why we got seated in a room in the back with no one else around. Also, can they not afford to heat the place? They could have easily seated us elsewhere. I was surprised at the prices, since there really was nothing special about the restaurant. The food is not that great. Serving a decent portion would be a start? $30 bucks for pasta? We had two of the cheapest meals and an appetizer and go out of their for over a hundred bucks. Expect to pay if you have more! It's really a bit uppity, and I regret not choosing another place with better service, table location and prices. If you go here, you will be paying for the hype.

Great Food and Service at Tribeca Grill. I have come to eat at Tribeca Grill a handful of times, and I have very much enjoyed each of my experiences! In fact, I brought my father, brother, and sister here last week to have dinner for my father's birthday. Both my brother and sister live in the city and have never eaten here before. Everyone was impressed with both the service and the food. Entering the restaurant, we were warmly greeted by the hostess and immediately shown to our table, Within five minutes, our waiter came to take our drink orders and was both friendly and attentive throughout our meal. The food was also great! My sister loved her crabcake appetizer, and my crispy sweetbread and mushroom salad was delicious; at the waiter's suggestion, my father ordered the duck breast, and he also very much enjoyed his meal. I have only positive things to say about Tribeca Grill, and I always enjoy eating here.

Terrible service NOT FAMILY FRIENDLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. We were in Tribeca with our family and decided to catch an early dinner around 3:30. The restaurant was empty, literally no one in it, yet we were seated right next to the restroom door. I am going to assume this was because we were there with 3 children.

The waiter was VERY rude and snotty, even my 7 year old said he was rude. The food took aver 45 minutes to arrive at our table. We ordered 3 black angus burgers, a child chicken finger, a Cesar salad and a salmon appetizer. When the food did arrive my families food arrived 10 minutes before mine. It was not at ALL what I expected and I asked to replace it with a Cesar salad like my mother in law had. After PLENTY of eye rolls and being told that they could not put chicken on it because it would take to long, they finally brought out..and I am DEAD SERIOUS HERE... two heads of romaine lettuce with ONE anchovie on top, not chopped..just a damm head of lettuce,no dressing,no egg,no chesse. I was appalled. We were never asked once if we wanted more drinks even after he saw everyone had empty glasses....shame shame!!! Empty restaurant and all!!

Note to waiter: We eat out several times a week with our children at very high end restaurants. I am notorious for leaving $100 tips for good service. I gave you a $10 to make a point...hope you got it!!!!!!!!
