The Scene
The Knitting Factory has become synonymous with all that is experimental in downtown music circles. The club's celebrated history in the avant garde goes back to 1987, when Michael Dorf opened the original Knit on Houston Street. The Knit relocated to its current Tribeca digs in 1994.
The Draw
Sprawling over three floors and outfitted with four bars, the space offers a good variety of goings-on. The Main Space plays host to the biggest local and touring acts, while the Tap Bar and Old Office host cozy sets by smaller names. The Main Space, with its high ceilings is a great room for music.

This interesting venue has a few rooms downstairs which, based on the other reviews I'm seeing here, must be quite tiny. Despite the fact that I walked downstairs to use the bathroom, I never saw these rooms, which apparently go down some three levels and must be concealed behind doors. When I arrived, I asked the doorman if the band I came to see had gone onstage yet. He assured me they hadn't. BUT FAILED TO MENTION THEY'D BE PLAYING DOWNSTAIRS. I also asked the bartender and she said she didn't know who was performing that night. Long story short, I enjoyed the bands on the main stage but missed my friend's band that I came to see. I guess they just assume all the patrons know about these tiny basement rooms. But I had even been to the Knitting Factory before and seen this same artist perform on the main stage. Geez, when customers ASK about a band BY NAME, be professional enough to direct them to the correct room. Don't assume they are regulars who know about the dark little basement three stories below. Waste of my time and money. Aside from the mix-up, it's a cool place, but that was a dealbreaker.

... which i do. i think this place is hit or miss. it really depends on who's playing. the service was very good. it was VERY crowded but then again, it was also a friday night.
Pros: stiff drinks, loud music, lots of fun
