The Scene
The Drawing Center, established in 1977, is the only nonprofit space in the country dedicated entirely to drawings. One of just a handful of alternative art spaces left in Soho, a neighborhood deserted by the commercial art scene, it succeeds in attracting art lovers from all over the city with its historical and contemporary exhibitions. The art world has lately seen a resurgence of drawing, especially by younger artists, and this excellent organization should continue to flourish.
The Draw
A variety of public programs feature talks and performances by well-respected artists and scholars. The Line Reading literary series, with a children's spinoff, brings in writers who explore the interplay of text and image. The Center's gorgeous interior, with lofty proportions and bleached-wood floors, is almost a reason to visit in itself.

Sister Spirit:
The Drawing Center isn't the only arts organization to focus exclusively on an area of concentration within the visual arts. The Sculpture Center--located in Queens--takes a similar approach with work made in three dimensions.
