What People Are Saying About John's of Bleecker Street
The Owner
John's of Bleecker Street
Owner
John's of Bleecker Street was founded in 1929 by John Sasso, and the restaurant is still in its original location. We serve coal-fired, brick oven pizza, cooked in 850-degree ovens, and made to order. Among the oldest pizzerias in the city, John's captures the spirit of the New York pie with thin crust, fresh toppings and fast service.
With its family-friendly environment and loyal following, John's serves thousands of people every week. Seating is in traditional, time-worn booths, surrounded by celebrity photos and New York memorabilia. We keep it simple and do it well, and we cordially invite you in for a pie!

No place is the subject of as much debate among the pizza-eating public as John's. The debate between camps is largely stylistic, centering on the distribution and amount of cheese on John's pies. Unlike other New York legends like Grimaldi's or Lombardi's, which sparingly distribute mozzarella in large squarish chunks, John's scatters pebble-sized pieces that form a single uninterrupted layer of cheese when cooked. Far less contentious are John's thin, charred crust, tasty fresh sauce and generous toppings. The restaurant itself features family-friendly dining rooms with wood booths and beat-up old tables, and lines form at peak hours.

How the hell in our NYC days and many LATE nights on Bleecker have we missed this joint? I mean, it's been around forever and is a stone's throw from Peculiar Pub. And like Lombardi's (or vice versa), just whole pies - no slices, no credit cards, no kidding. This place also won Best Pizza on Citysearch 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2004. Come on you slackers, where've ya been the past few years? Don't get fat and lazy on us. Walking into this place (after a slight wait) is like walking into the rathskeller...

This is the place to eat a casual meal in NY. Service was great and pizza was out of this world, thin, hot and without a doubt the best . You hear alot about other places being rude and poor quality food to us tourists but this is not the case at Johns. The food and service was so good we went back the following day and received the same great service and great pizza. We are now proudly wearing our Johns Pizzaria T-shirts and can't wait till our next vist to our new favorite pizza place.Don't forget to tip for good service and food because you will go back.

John's of Bleecker Street has been making pizza since 1929 and it is still going strong today judging by the number of persons who are already queueing up before 5 PM. This is a real honest-to-goodness genuine Italian pizza (and not at all resembling the Albanian pizza that are all over New York for those not in the know). John's makes its own red sauce and it is not salty or oily. It is made perfectly and you will come back for more, guaranteed. This is a cash only business so be prepared. There is a cash machine inside if you forget.
