What Our Expert Scouts Say

Sacred Chow

There are tons of vegan restaurants in the Greenwich Village area, but Sacred Chow is the ultimate gem. I always order the same thing: Western tofu hero and their soup of the day. It has always impressed the friends I take there. Great for lunch.

Vermin and Bad Service. This place is a nightmare. The food is terrible and over-priced. The waitress had no personality and was rude. There was vermin skittering around the counter when I went to pay for my food. When I brought it to the rude waitress' attention she simply brushed them off the counter. NEVER AGAIN!

droolworthy vegan brunch. This is by far the best vegan brunch in NYC. The tofu scramble w. gravy over biscuits was gooey and savory, with the biscuits utilizing steamed greens as a buffer to keep the gravy from ruining their perfect crumbliness. The Italian frittata was even better...I've never had vegan cheese that tasted so good or melted so well, and it was a perfect counterpoint to the tangy tomato sauce. I'll have to go back again for lunch or dinner...the happy hour deals on the menu definitely caught my eye (you can get various discounts on food if you buy a drink). A vegan himself, the waiter had tried almost everything on the menu, thus was able to make helpful reccomendations.

Ommmmmmmmmmmmm my. Peaceful atmosphere and wonderful food. I can't believe its vegan - especially the moist carrot cake and the delicious soybuttermilk biscuits. Great shakes and drinks but come for the divine selection of tapas and the great salads (the shiitake and spinach gets major props).

And the service is fabulous (Paul rocks!) - very knowledgeable and attentive yet unobtrusive. I feel blessed to have found this place.

yummy smoothies and vegetarian asian tapas. this is a very serene place with tasty food. too bad they don't get enough foot traffic because it's on such a quiet street. it's hard to find a tasty vegetarian salad in new york city after lunch but i found it here. the combination tapas plates are a good deal because you can choose from a selection of noodles, proteins, greens and hummus of the day. i walked away feeling full, healthy and satisfied even though it's vegetarian.

Okay, so it mightn't look like much..... When we saw how small and cramped it was, we almost passed it up for someplace more 'sit-down'. But am I glad we didn't! Sure, this place is far better for take-away than for dinner, but even at 9pm, a sampler plate (with seconds!) ordered at the counter satisfied greatly. Unlike most restaurants of its type, there's no worries about what's vegan and what's not...everything is...which is also a big plus on the side of the take-away, seeing as there isn't exactly a huge choice when it comes to where you're going to order in vegan food. We're definitely going to be returning, and we're especially looking forward to their upcoming move....to a bigger location!
