Editorial Review for Murray's Cheese Shop – by Allison Austin

The Scene
Founded in 1940 as a wholesale dairy distributor, the shop spent 64 years in a charmingly cramped space on the corner of Cornelia and Bleecker before crossing the street to larger digs. Cheese lovers are mourning the old space, but the bright, clean, spacious new store is at least four times larger, has a classroom and a cheese cave, and, best of all, the behind-the-counter cheese guys made the move, which means the advice and service is as good as ever.

The Goods
Over 400 varieties of cheese can be found here, and it's not all esoteric French stuff like the hazelnut-infused Beaufort Alpage. Next to the Capriole Crocodile Tears and Rollingstone Chevre, you can still find Parmesan for your pasta, and, yes, sliced American. Of course, they also have all the bread and crackers you'll need to spread your cheese on.

The new store is larger than before. However, it is lacking in customer service despite a fully staffed counter. I tried buying some stuff, but gave up due the mayhem/confusion in the store. No one knew where the line begin/end and where/how to pay. I was sent from one end to the other end to pay. Unfortunately, no one was manning the cash register. After requesting assistance several times (and was ignored or asked to wait another minute), I decided that it was not worth the effort (after waiting for over 10 minutes). If you value your time and don't care to deal with mayhem/craziness, have your cheese delivered via freshdirect and stay away from this store until management irons out the operation kinks and the staff knows what they are doing.

Pros: Good Cheese

This is the best cheese shop on the planet. Okay...it's small, but it's wonderful. It is a true neighborhood gem. NEVER EVER close, Murray's Cheese Shop!! Stay around forever!

Pros: great cheese, open late most days, wonderful pasta
