The Scene
The framed poster of the Monkees film "Head" on the wall here accurately captures Rockit Scientist's feel: sort of trippy, and lots of fun. Knowledgeable clerks strive to assist you in finding a new favorite record, and they're always happy to translate the florid labeling system. Records are marked with homemade genres like "proto punk U.K. freek madness." Although the store is packed with music and people, it's still kept surprisingly neat, down to the boxes of LPs lining the floor and the framed posters.
The Goods
Although Rockit Scientist will please discriminating collectors (snag the Beatles' "Yesterday" 45 for $80 or a Pink Fairies LP for $60 off the back wall cache), the store also stocks everything from top-40 pop to classic rock. A small shelf of used CDs often has great finds (for a low $7), and there's also new discs from Sigur Ros to Fela Kuti.

Probably one of the best music stores in terms of the history of rock and roll: from 1950's doo-wop/rock-ability, to 60's garage/folk bands, 70's prog/psychadelic/punk rock, and 80s new wave. Not much in terms of newer music. Great used selction and hard to find vinyl.

Not necessarily the place to go for comprehensive selection, this tiny record store does offer nuggets in the form of quirky soundtracks, 1970s prog rock, psychedelia, classic rock, and plenty o'punk. Also a good source of box sets and promos. Fits right into the avant garde businesses of Carmine Street.
