I wonder how long Mike Piazza has to wait for a table? – Either the proprietors double book or they don't know how long it takes the average customer to dine (incredulour considering that they have been in business since before Frank Sinatra passed on).
This is the ideal restaurant for the diner who likes to wait outdoors for upwards of an hour for a table in the dead of winter ever with reservations made well in advance. There is enough standing room inside for maybe six (6) people (standing on top of each other).
The proprietors are not what I would refer to as warm and fuzzy. Irreverant is the appropriate term.
I have given this restaurant a one (1) star rating only because I could not publish my review with a 0 rating.
uncreative food, noisy, bad mannered – As a lifetime residential of this neighborhood, this place is becoming a huge annoyance to neighbors. Owners are rude to both customers and surrounding residents. The food is MEDIOCRE AT BEST. In desperation for business the owner sits in the street hawking up passerby's. Offensiveness and rudeness abound!. A shame that a lovely area of the village is blighted by this place.
Great value -- quirky service -- big hassles – This place serves very good red-sauce Italian. Nothing creative but a bunch of Southern Italian staples done very well and served in colossal portions.
It has a reputation for amazing value, which is accurate -- but don't think it's cheap. The value comes from getting at least two servings from every entree. (Seriously, the bone on my veal chop was like the bone that tips over the car on the closing credits of The Flinstones.)
So what's the downside?
First of all, it's a hassle to eat here. Getting a prime time reservation means calling a month ahead of time. You can sit easily if you go at six, but then the staff will rush you because they want to clear the tables for the people at eight.
And then there's the staff. The first time we ate there, the hostess basically accused my wife of stealing someone else's reservation and sitting on false pretenses. We hadn't. (Another foursome with the same last name came half an hour after us. Either they were lying about having a reservation or, more likely, someone forgot to write one of them down.)
Also, a man that I'd guess is the owner, gets very familiar with diners very fast. Not ten minutes after some friends of mine had come in for the first time, he asked one of them when she was due -- even though she wasn't pregnant. The guy said it with such obviously good intentions that no one took offense -- but I'm guessing a lot of women wouldn't have shrugged that one off so gracefully.
Italian dinner at Grandma's house – I have never dined with an Italian family, but after visiting Piccolo Angolo, I feel like I have. With the entrance to the kitchen visible from any seat, the closely packed tables give the room a home dining room feel.
As for the food, it certainly fits the part. Appetizers of Stuffed Mushrooms (with prosciutto, mortadella, parmigiano cheese, and bread crums) highlight the Antipasto section of the menu, while the Meat Lasagna also makes for a nice family style appetizer a little farther down the menu in the Pasta section. Listen closely to the many specials offered nightly, although the traditional diner will be more than happy ordering meatballs the size of their head (ok, maybe not head, but certainly larger than a fist).
Worst service ever. – Don't waste your time on this one. I had a reservation, but had to wait for 20 minutes even tough they had two empty tables. Dirty table cloths and a very rude staff.
Fantastic Food; Horrible Service – I have eaten at Piccolo Angolo many times and cannot stop raving about the food. However, the service at this restaurant is horrendous and the owner is extremely rude and disrespectful. I understand that it is a challenge to get reservations; however, I was there two weeks ago and was totally taken aback at how rude and insulting the owner was to my friend. The restaurant was virtually empty and a staff member the previous day had told me on the phone not to worry about a reservation since I was planning on being at the restaurant at 5:30pm. When my friend arrived at the restaurant the owner in a very disrespectful way told her that he did not have anything available even though most of the tables were empty. She left after this exchange, where I not knowing what had transpired, arrived at the restaurant to ask for a table and told him I didn't have reservations. After some reluctance he proceeded to seat me. When I called my friend to tell her about the table, she told me that she had arrived earlier and had been turned away. I don't understand this double standard. Needless to say I will not be returning nor recommending this place of business to anyone. NYC has too many restaurants with great food and service for anyone to be subject to this type of behavior.
I love this place. – I'm not really crazy about Italian food, but perhaps that is because just like what happens to Mexican food or any other food in this country they don't know what they're doing. This place is amazing, Renato the owner has always been very nice, so is his daughter and the rest of the crew. the food is amazing, I would call it homemade food, although I'm not Italian, but can tell the difference. anyway, I would go back anytime. Salut Renato!!!!!
Bad Experience – Had dinner there tonight. I ordered the braciole with a side salad and my husband ordered veal parm with a side pasta. The waiter urged me to order the broccoli rabe and split a salad. I took one bite of the broccoli rabe and felt something very sharp in my mouth. I pulled a sharp metal wire out of my mouth and then another one. When I called the waiter over their response was "oh no, not again" I was very nice, polite and calm about it. They said the kitchen doesn't clean the broccoli rabe well an the wire that holds it together wasn't properly removed. They apologized and we finished our dinner. The bill came. They did not remove the charge for that dish or offer us anything like dessert, coffee or anything to make up for the fact that the wire I pulled out of my mouth could have severely injured me. I was disappointed by their lack of concern for a problem that they knew they had in their kitchen.
Best In The West – Sauces are second to none. Not cheap but a lot of food. This restaurant's food is only upstaged by being in Italy.
Make reservations early in the day and don't count on being seated at your reserved time. The wait is worth the experience.
Chicken Parmesean out of this world – The only thing that blew us away here was the chicken parm. Everything else on the menu has just been subpar. But it's a cute whole in the wall find. You'll never have chicken parm this good anywhere else, I'm telling you!
