What Our Expert Scouts Say

November 02, 2012

It's a little passe today, but the city's perennial "most romantic restaurant" hasn't gotten any less beautiful, nor its fireplace any less transporting. The food isn't the final word in high gastronomy, but it's very good, and resists fads in a commendable way. NYC needs more places like this, not less.

Please Leave..... The entire dinner was really nothing to write home about. It was a pre fixe menu (valentine's weekend) so I won't judge too harshly. It was all pretty much ruined however when the maitre de came over to my table and asked if I wouldn't mind having my after dinner drinks at the bar because there was a couple waiting to be seated. I told him I really wish he would have just asked the waiter at what point we were in our meal. He would've realized I had already asked for my check. Really unforgivable and embarassing considering I asked for the check the minute they cleared our desert plates. I didn't even order coffee. Way to ruin my 7 yr anniversary with my girlfriend. I won't over analyze their motives. Just a very unfortunate experience.

Great place for a special dinner. Been here many times before. I have been to the best places in NY and the worst. I try not to let reviewers sway me since you never know their motives. The place is overpriced but the food is great. Never been disappointed.

As to the last reviewer, The city gives out ratings on cleanliness not the quality of the food. How can you put health concious and foie gras in the same sentence?? How did the bass taste?? Pate never looks appetizing, but how was the taste?? Health concious?? Scary!

Amongst the worst meals ever. It is difficult to describe the effects of food on a person's palate. My wife and I approached this restaurant due to the promise of a romantic ambience and appropriate decor reflective of our dedication and love to each other.

The service was average and the waitress was not engaging in any manner. I cannot recommend the food as the foie gras appeared to be a slab of butter without texture or flavor. The striped bass was dropped in a plate that was shaped like a cymbal, which permitted clanging noise to occur when I reached into this dish to cut into the fish. The rabbit and pork pate was cut into cubes and was not very appetizing.

We are all health conscious and this restaurant does not deliver on proper food. Although it gets an A for food quality by the city of NY, I wonder how the restaurant was able to acquire this food rating.

The bar, piano, and lounge area are nice to sit and enjoy a cocktail. The Pouilly-Fuisse wine was good and the beauty of the dining experience ended there.

All in all, a bad establishment with too much publicity. The name is confusing, too. Sorry.

Outstanding. This is one of my favorite restaurants in the village. I first came here 15 years ago and instantly fell in love with it. The Beef Wellington is wonderful, but no matter the dish, it will be prepared to your satisfaction. The service is always personal and attentive. It's located in an old carriage house and the decor is beautiful. Very romantic.

ROMANTIC?. Dined here during restaurant week in NYC. I was super excited because of all the good reviews...but what a disappointment. The restaurant was noisy, the food substandard and the prices outrageous. The only positive was the service is very good. Definately will not be returning.

romantic. Great place for a romantic moment. The food is good but a little pricey. It's ok if you want to try a different ambience.

If you propose here...your a jackass. This is the kind of place that looks authentic through the window but when you get in you'll see that it resembles more of a 1970's basement refurbish ( with faux brickwork and sheetrock walls that were done over) than an intimate late 1700's eatery. Disneyland does a better job of recreating the era. The bartender was nice, but the waiter was an absentee drone who could care less if we were alive.

The food was decent but of course completely overpriced...unfortunately the service and ambience does not make up the difference. Paul Revere is turning in his grave
