The Scene
Loosened-tie guys and girls with low-cut tops and lots of lipstick pack into this way-West bar for a weekend dose of drinking, flirting and dancing anywhere there's room. Old jazz-legend photos pepper the walls, but the deafening soundtrack is purely "Sounds of the '70s," "Ultimate '80s" and "'90s Dance Party." It's a real domestic-beer crowd--Red Stripe and Corona pass for cultural exploration--and a round of shots could conceivably involve the ladies sitting on the guys' laps while they knock back Lemon Drops.
The Draw
Slims offers a come-as-you-are venue for being as crazy as you want to be without judgment. Bring a big group and meet up with other big groups, and pretty soon your boss is cutting loose with the chick in the tube top and she's dancing on the bar and hey, we should do this every Thursday. Since everyone is prowling, anyone is fair game.

I was at Automatic a few weeks ago, and was totally repulsed by the scene. It's a combination of self-important wannabe "socialites", tourists, over-eager men, and a colossally RUDE staff. The guy at the door was a creeper (level 10!) who let me and my sister in, but then AFTER we had gone in, but knowing we were all together, told my boyfriend that there were too many guys, and he would see what he could do... we argued a bit, and since we involved the other people on line my boyfriend got in, but I'm sure a $20 would have helped things, if only I had one to spend after paying for drinks. To be honest, I'm fairly willing to over-pay for my drink in NYC bars/clubs because it goes with the territory. but in this place I really begrudged the bartender for the watery drink because he was overly curt and gave us a mean look for only tipping $2 a drink. I know there are people who love Automatic Slims but I hope I never, never ever have to go here again. Oh, and the bathroom is super stank-ass, it smells like old urine, is littered with trash, but no TP in sight. This place used to have a great rep, but right now it's a horrible, desperate scene...although I'm sure they're making a fortune.
Pros: I suppose other people have heard of the place...if that's important to you.
Cons: Desperate crowd, rude staff, dirty bathrooms, I never want to go back
