The Scene
This culinary paean to Austria is unabashedly understated with its small square tables and midnight blue banquettes. However, the selections from Julian Schnabel's private collection of contemporary art, which hang unobtrusively on the dining room walls, has made Wallse a destination for art lovers. Most of the dishes--like the decor--are well-behaved, not provocatively sensational.

The Food
The nouveau variations on Austria's solid cuisine tend to all things creamy. Less rich old-world stalwarts fare better: The wiener schnitzel made from veal is served with a summery cool potato-cucumber salad and tangy-sweet lingonberries. Any dish that includes Wallse's delectably mild horseradish sauce is also recommended. Traditional fare like spaetzle (akin to gnocchi), kohlrabi (a kind of turnip) and any fish entree can be blandly buttery.

service is awesome here, the restaurant is beautiful, the servers are nice and you have to make a reservation. the food was great, but the portions were soooo tiny =( the experience was good, and i had a great time with my friends, but i wouldn't come here often because i will always leave feeling a little hungry. i will, however, come again if it's a super special occasion because the experience itself was great.

Having lived in Vienna for a while, I have been scouring the city for a genuine Austrian place. Wallse is a beautiful, elegant restaurant with wonderful service and a WONDERFUL Austrian wine list - the menu is fine - to be honest, I just don't want to spend that much money for a Wiener Schnitzel, gussied up or not. The food was fine, but not quite worth the prices - however, the wine (again) was just amazing. We ordered a bottle of Pichler Riesling from Durnstein - a place I stayed in Austria - and the waiter, who wasn't even the sommelier, knew the exact hill that the vineyard was on where the wine was grown. (It was also the best bottle of Riesling I have ever had outside of Austria.) I would recommend going there and spending money on some appetizers and lots of wine - or just not expecting too much out of the food. However, for those who don't know Austrian food as well it could be a fun experience - oh, and the desserts are delicious.

Six of us had an excellent meal at this restaurant. But it was a typical NY summer nilght: hot and muggy. We asked several times for the air conditioning to be increased but nothing happened. The doors stay open so any AC that does occur is swiftly dissapated. Finally we threatened to walk out and only then did they close the door and it became comfortable in this packed place. It boggles my mind that a place that has great food would provide a very uncomfortable dining experience. The fish dishes were very good and those that had the wiener schnitzel also said it was very good.
