With its wood tables, artfully arranged books, and traditional American fare (sadly, rather uneven of late), A and W is a destination restaurant, the kind of place you go to when you absolutely must feel cozy. It can get a little too cozy at certain times--brunchtime in particular--but it's a delightful place to take tea and catch up with old friends or read a good book.

Rainy day retreat
by mtdelight at Citysearch
Exhausted from Christmas shopping and in town for a few days, my small group and I commandered a taxi on a recent cold, rainy Saturday to this charming retreat. In search of some tea, the size of the place was just right, the menu was savoury, the service was approriate....our only compalint, the music! In a retreat you want soothing music, not jarring, not Flamenco, not jumpy jazz. It was a bit diconcerting and we left not as nurtured as we would have like to have been. The decor speaks American, but the staff spoke only Spanish. Did management recently changed?
- Cons: Music, Restroom
Just What You Wanted

It's as if you've stumbled into a country inn somewhere in TriBeCa, providing respite from the urban jungle outside. The service is never rushed, whether you're sitting at a table, or in one of the easy chairs by the faux fireplace. Teas, served loose in the pot, with a tea strainer always taste of a great blend (given they're Harney and Sons). The food, while not fancy, is as close to comfort food as possible. They must make some of the best mashed potatoes I've ever tasted. Everything always hits the spot without the sense of under or overeating, providing enough energy to head back out...
- Pros: Calm, Pleasant Service, Fair Price
