Tavern On Jane

This is where you dine when you've crossed over into "adulthood." It's mellow-casual yet romantic with a beet salad to die for.

An otherwise unremarkable West Village tavern, Tavern on Jane does have one secret: it serves a better hamburger than the overrated meat-lumps across the street at the Corner Bistro. Trust me.

Tavern On Jane = Quaint.... Ate here Friday September 30, 2011. We went here because we got a deal for a discount 50%off /up to $25.00 off check (site will remain unnamed). We are glad we did! It is a relatively small, well kept good looking place. There is a fireplace in a back alcove dinning area (seems great for a group/party/gathering). There are 2 waitstaff and a busboy - due to the size and flow design of the room, but all help out. Our waiter was a nice person. The discount says "18% gratuity may be added to check" - it was, we gave him 20%! The food selection and quality for what is described as a "tavern" is excellent. Our waiter recommended a wine better than the selection we were thinking of at the same price when asked to help with our possible choice. He actually had us sample the choices before agreeing to buy. I had a half a roasted chicken and switched white rice for potatoes and broccoli. It was very moist and flavorful chicken. My wife had a great fish and chips dinner with excellent tartar sauce. MUCH better than ANYTHING you could get from Salt & Battery! A REAL taste of England!! The vibe is a mix of Cheers and a New England type eatery. The exposed brick walls and the butcher paper on the tables with a glass of crayons to doodle with are a nice touch. If we lived in the neighborhood this would DEFINITELY be "our neighborhood go to place". We told our waiter who works Wednesday - Friday that we will see us again.

Great West Village Place. Tavern On Jane captures everything that makes the West Village a great neighborhood. The bar, that doubles and a great restaurant, invites all to come in and have a great time. Locals and visitors can easily find a comfortable place in this friendly establishment.

The food, music and conversation are all well done.

During the day and for weekend brunch, it is a great place to bring the family.

You gotta go where everybody knows your name!. I was looking for cozy places in The Village to go to dinner with a good friend this past Thurs. 12.17. A fireplace was a prerequisite as the weather had recently turned frigid. I found Tavern On Jane online. I was hooked at first glance. The website pictures do not do it justice. It is a lovely old building with brick and a great wooden bar. If you are not familiar with this part of The West Village, the neighborhood looks like you have stepped back in time before cars and electricity with a warmth and charm that reminded me of something out of Dickens, or Diagon Alley. When we got there around 6 PM we were immediately greeted and seated with an apology up front for a holiday party which would crowd the place shortly. The service was attentive, the food sturdy, the holiday lights were enchanting and the atmosphere was like a rustic "Cheers". Everyone knew everyone and my friend and I felt very much at home. I will be back...frequently...

An old favorite gone downhill. I use to love this place as a local.. It seems to have gone downhill...the specials are way overpriced and underwhelming ..and they use to be varied and excellant... and the food quality is just generally mediocre...

Prices have gone up...which unfortunately doesn't equate with a better meal....too bad , I think the staff is nice and I like the owners...but I rarely go anymore..

Best neighborhood place!. I love the Tavern on Jane. This is a great neighborhood place with the best bartenders and staff. You can always find a friendly face at the Tavern. It's a neighborhood favorite as well as a home away from home for travellers. The food is always delicious. Hats off to the owners for creating such an awesome place.

Best Neighborhood Joint. This place is the Cheers of the West Village. The food is excellent (better burgers than some of the more "famous places...and far less of a wait time for a table!!), great, friendly service, kid friendly and a great bar. In the winter the fireplace roars and makes for a cozy dinner.

Whether it's your first time here or you're here every week, you're always made to feel welcome and comfortable. The chef is really good about special orders too.

Great back room for a semi-private party or meeting....

too much 4 a pint. nice and cozy. Had a drink in a few area bars and had the same draft beer in each. They went from four dollars in one to SEVEN in ToJ.

Not What It Used To Be. Time for a recent review on this once terrific place. Lower quality food, barkeeps, cleanliness, and clientele make me wonder if it's under new management. If you must drop in, grab a table way in back, away from Baby Carriage Central. Steer clear of the over-priced, over-cooked nightly 'specials' in favor of a basic burger, club sandwich, or chopped salad. With so many other new dining options in the neighborhood, I can't understand why Tavern on Jane let itself go so.

Good Tavern Food. I have lived in the West Village all my life. I used to think the Corner Bistro was the best burger in town. I was wrong. The Tavern's burger kicks the Bistro's A*s! The Chickory salad is 1st class too. Go here for good "grub" any day of the week.
