“very cozy place.”
“Our very friendly waiter made it up to us by giving us free desserts.”
“Never tried the food, but the house brews (all they have and $6 a pop) were good, but no liquor license means no mixed drinks.”
“The food is great, moderate prices.”
“The menu was extremely limited--no dessert--so beware this IS NOT A CULINARY EXPERIENCE YOU WILL BE HAVING--I do believe it didnt cost an arm and a leg too, which is good since it was the food was THAT BAD.”
“It is probably a good place to go with a bunch of people for drinks, AGAIN NOT FOOD”
“If you don't have $6 to your name and your idea of a "good beer" is budlight, go back to Friday's.”
“In this case, the waiter was just rude.”
“This means the beer prices are ridiculous and staff make "errors" with their addtion for a round of drinks.”
“have sat at a table of seven people with six dogs on our laps, Chumley's is cool with dogs as long as they do not bark or create a distrubence.”
Hope it reopens. I truly miss this place. I went there when I first moved in the tri-state area and it became my "regular" spot after that. I really enjoyed the atmosphere especially during winter when they had the fireplace going.. A very cozy place. I liked the people that worked there. Hope it reopens one day.

I love(d) this place, just not on a Friday or Saturday night..
I really hope this amazing spot opens again. Though avoid it on an Friday or Saturday night. It's a mess with college kids and good luck trying to find a place to stand, let alone sit. And to get a drink you better grab 3 since you'll have to wait another hour in line.
But...I have spend a few afternoons with friends enjoying the atmosphere, food and beer. A classic place never to be forgotten (by me). And, I will never forget "finding" the "secret" door.
Editorial Review. The old Greenwich Village speakeasy with the original booths, fireplace and false entrance is closed until further notice.

Chumley's.
Let's just hope it reopens as soon as possible.
The haters on this board can't appreciate a good thing.
Good beer. I heard about this place from a friend. We went and it was very crowded... The raspberry beer was very good. We didn't get to eat... but I heard that the burgers are very good here.
Poor customer service and very cold.. We visited here at 2pm on Monday and it wasn't a great experience. There was only us and another couple there!! It was really cold in the bar and I could see my breath in the air in front of me even though I was indoors!!! The barman was not conversational at all and made us feel like it was an inconvenience to him to serve us. The cider tasted like pear juice too. Despite all this, it was worth going just to see it as we were visiting the area. I would have felt it was a wasted journey if I had travelled all the way there just to visit Chumley's. The decor is good and it's an interesting place to see.
Best-Kept Secret.
Seriously, it seems to be a trend that somehow it slips out to obnoxious tourists that there's a cool bar/restaurant that only people in the know know about. Then these tourist types flock there and stink up the place taking all the good tables and acting like jerks.
Anyway, I've always had a positive experience there, even though once we had to wait in the over-crowded bar over an hour as stupid frat guys spilled their beer all over us.
But my portabello burger on english muffin was always good, and the cider was good too. Although my last trip there I think they watered down the cider because it was clear and tasted more pear-ish than apple to me.
But I really loved the framed pictures of authors and bookcovers on the wall, and how the plac ehad the old-timey feeling to it.
