Everyone flocks here for the Lobster Rolls, but the fried oysters are the real treats.
While most famous for its wonderful lobster roll, Pearl is primarily an oyster bar, and few places serve the things, cold and on the half shell, better.
Pescetarians Beware! – I?ve been to Pearl Oyster Bar a few times before and have always had a great meal, but I have a big complaint after my last visit. First off, I should say that I?m a pescetarian (I don?t eat any meat except for fish) which is why seafood places are always a good dinner option when out with friends. I got the wild bass special which was served on a bed of what appeared to just be a simple vegetable medley of diced carrots, tomatoes, peas and brussel sprouts. Mid-way through the meal, however, I noticed that what was giving the medley its smoky flavor was that it also contained diced ham. Needles to say I was not happy. The fact that it had pork mixed in was not mentioned at all in its description and it was so cleverly snuck into the medley that I didn?t notice it at first as it just appeared to be a diced carrot. Hopefully they will change this recipe or at least warn people in the future.
yum yum yum! – let me start by saying that i'm not from new york, i am just visiting from Los Angeles and love oysters and mussels. the only reason i went to Pearl Oyster Bar was becasue of another out-of-towner was recommended to this restaurant by his hotel. before going i read these reviews and was scared by the number of people who said the staff was rude. i don't know, maybe becasue it was a slow monday night and there wasn't a line of people waiting outside, our waitress was extrememly nice and funny too boot. mind you, i was scared she was going to bite my head off for having to ask the same question three times. but there were no problems. the mussels were superb with their creamy creamy sauce the fries that accompanied the lobster roll were delicious super skinny shoe strings and the oyster were pretty gosh darn good too. the only down side i saw was the limited wine selection. i like my wine and there wasn't much to choose from. (i guess the fact that they had sold out on three or four bottle didn't help.) but overall, it was delish! i recommend it. but go on a slow night to not upset the natives!
p.s. our party of three was squished onto a table for two, so be sure you're friends with whomever you go.
Incredibly RUDE - DON'T GO!! – We just experienced the absolute WORST service at this restaurant!! I'll be fair and say the food was very good. There were 4 of us sharing a meal and having a wonderful time on a Friday night. The service seemed very rushed, but the restaurant was busy, so I didn't think anything of it. When my friend asked for a glass of dessert wine after the bill arrived, the hostess REFUSED! We couldn't believe it! She said that there was a wait for our table and they closed in an hour and a half so they wanted to turn over our table. We had only been there 45 minutes and In my life I've never been told by a hostess to basically HURRY UP AND LEAVE! I mean - come on - we live in New York City where new, good restaurants sprout up each day - I don't care who they are, they can't treat customers like they should be honored to be allowed to eat their food. Our bill was $287 - not chump change to be hustled out the door. You know that saying, "One dissatisfied customer tells at least 10 people about their experience"...well, it's my mission to tell everyone NOT TO GIVE THIS RESTAURANT YOUR BUSINESS! Go someplace where they'll appreciate that you chose to spend your time and money there.
Where did Ed go? – He was like finding the "Pearl" in the Oyster, always a pleasure. His personality made good food that much better.
AMAZING fried oysters and creamy mussels, friendly service, good vibe! – I have been to most of the pretenders to the lobster shack throne but the first--Pearl--is still the best; not to mention the best buy. They have an incredible wine list; especially for the price. The prices may creep up but never jump up. We eat there once a week and I have to say that I can not think of another restaurant that has turned out such consistantly fine food so many years in a row. My new favorite is a Caesar salad followed by sinfully creamy mussels with a side of fries. A friend was able to tear herself away from the lobster roll for one night (and if you can do this, you are rewarded by the other dishes) to have the most delicious, juicy, sweet scallops I have ever tasted. (We could have done with one more but it was only $22 with a heaping side of vegetables--where do you get scallops that good that cheap, right?) I could use a new dessert but other than that, perfection! PS-to the sick WVillager, it's too easy to blame a fish joint for your illness. I've eaten there for 8 straight years and never gotten sick.
Worst Food illness of my life – I went to eat at this Restaurant with my boyfriend, ate steamed clams, steamed lobster, and a lobster roll, and me and my boyfriend became violently ill from our meal that night, and the next morning. We clearly got food poisioning. I went into the restuarant 2 days later, spoke with the Manager Edward, and he hesitantly said he would refund me for my entire bill (over $100), considering i even had to miss a day of work from being ill. When I recieved my credit card statement, i was only refunded 10.00. I called the restaurant when i relaized this, spoke with the Owner, Rebecca, who was extremely rude, and she refused to give me a refund, even though i was originally promissed one the day i came into the Restaurant. She had little concern to the fact i was ill, or doing anything to make up for my illness. she did not even apologize.
Reminds me of Boston! – Great place. Had dinner last week and wasn't that hungry so I had clam chowder. I tried the lobster roll, that was amazing. Gets crowded!
Lobser Roll is the star! – Everything I've had here is good, but I can't seem to separate myself from their tasty lobster roll.
I love sitting at the counter too. Nice ambiance. Everyone there seems so happy and in to the food.
Fried oysters, yummy. Raw oysters, yummy. Nice chowder.
I really need to try their steamed whole fish sometime...
Service was less than spectacular – I went to dinner with a friend on Saturday night. After waiting 45 minutes for a table we were packed into a small table in the back. We were constantly being rushed! The server tried to take away our oysters before we had finished (there was one oyster clearly sitting there in its shell). In his rush he knocked over my friends glass of champagne and then quizzed us about how much was left in the glass. It was half full and he brough back a half glass of champgane for her. Give me a break! You knocked over her drink - bring a new one! Then they took away my lobster roll before I finished and took the desert away as soon as I put my spoon down. They brought us the check while the desert was still on the table and processed it before my companion's glass of port had even been touched. I understand they are busy but when you pay $125 for dinner for two they should at least give you the table for an hour.
Food was decent but service destroyed the evening.
Best Lobster Rolls Ever! – My girlfriend took me here and waited in line for an hour. The hostess was very nice and entertaining and made it seem like we were her top priority. I suggest arriving here at 5:45, as the lines start to form around then, as everyone awaits for the famous lobster rolls and oysters. One bowl of their delicious clam chowder with bacon chunks is not enough for the average person's taste buds, as you'll definitly be craving for more. Lobster rolls and shoe string fries combination are truly made in heaven. And definitly try this dish with a glass of white wine - it's the perfect touch for anyone's taste.
