What People Are Saying About Malatesta Trattoria
The Owner
Malatesta Trattoria
Owner
When it first unfastened its doors 10 years ago, few would have bet on the chances of a northern Italian bistro situated in the then-tough jungle of the Far West Village. Unpretentious attitude, atmosphere true-to-the-origins and good management must have beaten the odds, as Malatesta Trattoria today is praised as one of the best options in the New York City scene when it comes to genuine Italian dining.
With every ingredient as fresh as it can get, Malatesta features the hearty specialties of Emilia Romagna keeping it simple, delicious and affordable. Oven-baked focaccia, homemade pastas and desserts, melting tender meats. Plus daily specials from organic salads to grilled fish. Choose from our small but strong wine list or enjoy it by the glass in a cozy candlelit environment pleasantly well-mannered and laid back at the same time.

In Short
Simple charms--exposed brick, breakaway doors, lacey curtains, and ceiling fans--enhance this reliable neighborhood favorite, where specials are written in marker on butcher paper, water comes in recycled wine bottles and wine is served in tumblers. There's no pretension on the menu either, which ranges from homemade pastas like tagliatelle Bolognese to heartier entrees like a plate-sized chicken cutlet adorned with arugula, tomato and a squirt of fresh lemon.

It's a hike for most, but well worth the trip for fresh pasta and inexpensive wine and they serve up one of the best chicken cutlets in the city. A true gem.

Really great food, although a bit pricey... this is the place I go when someone is treating me to lunch. The salad with chicken is delicious, and the dessert menu is to die for. Looking forward to my next trip there!
