Cozy spot with good food. I've been here several times and the food is always good. The joint jumps at night, so the restaurant gets noisy and crowded and you will have to wait for a table. One of the best choices in the far west village, although there are lots of other trattorias of this caliber in the village.

My favorite restaurant in New York!. This is my favorite restaurant in New York. I have been coming to Malatesta Trattoria for years now, have been for every birthday, Valentines Day, every time family comes in town, and it has always been fabulous. Their menu is simple, but delicious and provides an intimat atmosphere with a helpful staff. I always order the lamb or gniocci, both are delicious, as is the spaghetti...they make all the noodles by hand, it's amazing!!!

rudest service. Good food as usual and horrible service. We were having a great time with some friends, 3 bottles of wine, a lot of food, and they brought us the check in the middle of the meal without asking if we cared for dessert or coffee. I gave the check back to the manager telling him that we were not done. ten minutes later, we had just ordered more wine, dessert , coffee and the manager asked us to leave because he needed the table!!!!

we were still eating and drinking. Who do they thing they are? what's with the attitude? I have a food business

a few blocks away and this is beyond rude and unacceptable. never going back !!!!!!!!!

Best Italian joint in the city. This place serves up simple and perfectly executed Italian food. The atmosphere reminds you of a local Italian trattoria, with the same service and settings. The wait staff is all friendly. The pasta is homemade and always fresh. The meat dishes are wonderfully done as well. They have some great Chianti to go with your meal. I would recommend the Bruschetta as an appetizer and the Tagliata Al Casale (Steak) and the Costoletta Di Agnello (Lamb Chop) for the meat courses. The best thing here is the Spaghetti Alla Chitarra, which is by far the best pasta around. Wow! The only downside to this place is the location, which is sketchy. The place is always full so make a reservation or be prepared to wait. With food like this, it is no surprise it is always full!

Great place for casual lunch or dinner. Charming and warm atmosphere, very rapid service and FANTASTIC spinach gnocchi! I have to add a few more words to my review in order to reach the 100 character minimum to post this so there we are . . .

A true gem. Keep this place a secret! Stumbled upon it last Saturday and it wound up being the most amazingly delightful dinner. The host (owner?) was very kind and seated us promptly even without a reservation. The ambiance: Simple paper bag votives. Specials on a piece of cardboard. Water served in reusable bottles. Warm and friendly. The food: superb. Grilled calamari appetizer was fresh and excellent. The gnocchi melts in your mouth. Penne arrabbiata was perfectly spicy. Coconut pudding dessert and tiramisu were second to none. The service: cordial and attentive. Completely reasonably priced.

As we were leaving, it started to rain. The host ran out after us and gave us an umbrella!

MEH...latesta.. Yes, you heard it here first: meh!-latesta... went in January and experienced everything you could hope to experience from the corner Italian place: a warm ambiance, good food, a charming (and accented, natch) waitstaff... those qualities faded with subsequent visits however. The service started to fray -- e.g. a waiter was very vocally opposed to me leaving part of my omelette on a plate. Another time, when we were one of three parties in the restaurant, service was no where to be found. And lately the food simply has been less than mouth watering. As a caveat, these not quite stellar experiences all happened at brunch so maybe that's when they send their A team home to rest. Moral of the story -- tread carefully here, or at least don't go before 4 pm.

The happiest place on earth. It's not Disney World, it's Malatesta. I've eaten here more times than I can count, and every time I am surprised at how it never gets old. The food, the pasta is always fresh. The service is prompt, charming and surprisingly always easy on the eyes. Despite a cash only drawback, paying is remarkably painless. An entire meal, with appetizers, wine, espresso and dessert is easy on the wallet. The spaghetti a la chiatara, the gnocchi, and the ravioli are all favorites...as is the panna cotta and profiterole. The salads are equally satisfying, esp. the artichoke. I reccommend the specials, they are always good. The wine list is worthwhile. The fact this place is a little piece of heaven, and people like heaven. It is popular. Make a reservation...or wait...it is worth it. Bring your friends for warm, family fun.

Great simple Execution - true passion for food!. simple, rustic fantastically executed italian food. The art of cooking is in executing simple dishes to perfection. The ministrone soup, gnocchi, basic tomato, basil pasta, panacotta are just excellent amongst others. Great value for money, very hospitable and knowledeable staff and most importantly you can see that they have passion for food! simple rustic decor adds to the charm. A must go!!
